T410 won't boot, blank screen and keyboard unresponsive at power up.

Hi, my Lenovo T410 laptop won't start. I hit the power button and it looks like it's about to boot up. The thinklight blinks on as normal, the cd drive is checked, the caps lock button blinks on, then nothing. No display, and keyboard is unresponsive. Power light remains on; if I leave it a while the fan comes on. I can turn the machine off using the power button, but the problem remains next time I switch it on.

I've tried removing power and battery, pressing power button 10 times then holding power for 30 secs, before replacing power and battery, but nothing happens. I've tried using a different keyboard. I've tried plugging in an external monitor. No change.

This problem appeared after I left it on overnight. I have a hunch that it went into hybernation mode, perhaps, and that it disrupted some important function which it was unable to complete. Not sure though. Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Pete

Welcome to the forum!

Sorry, to hear about your problem. Could you try connecting the T410 to an external monitor and check if at least you can see the boot logo?

Re: T410 won't boot, blank screen and keyboard unresponsive at power up.

Hi, thanks for getting back. I did try attaching to an external monitor when the machine was off. I Turned it on but saw nothing appear on the external monitor. Perhaps this means that it doesn't get as far a the boot logo. Incidentally I've left it running now for 45 mins and the fan comes on periodically, but the keyboard is still unresponsive and the screen is still blank. The power button remains on.

Re: T410 won't boot, blank screen and keyboard unresponsive at power up.

That doesn't look good.

After it's running for a while, try pressing the key combination Fn + F7 and see if something happens.

If that doesn't help, I would say to remove the ac adapter, the battery, then the hard disc and both ram modules. Try booting with that config, the T410 should give you a series of loud beeps. If not that may be big trouble.

To remove the above follow the HMM manual, which you can get from here: click me!

Re: T410 won't boot, blank screen and keyboard unresponsive at power up.

Hi, Fn+F7 didn't do anything.

So I took out the HDD and both RAM modules, including the one under the keyboard. At power on it beeped as follows: 1 beep, followed by 2 series of 3 beeps, followed by 1 beep.

I replace the HDD and one ram module under the keyboard leaving the other one out - this didn't change anything; I then switched up the RAM modules - again, no change. Does this mean the motherboard and processor are OK? What could the problem possibly be in this case? Very mysterious!

Incidentally, I should perhaps have mentioned that I kept the unit in an unheated room and it did get very cold there a few days ago, which coincides with when the booting problem first appeared.

Those beeps are a good omen, (no beeps would mean a higher possibility of a dead mobo). Maybe the display cable  is faulty, or the panel... or a motherboard fuse. Altough I don't like the behaviour it shows with an external monitor.

Could you post the 7 digit  model number of your T410? You can find it in a black and white sticker at the bottom case.

S/N xxxx

No, nothing shows on the screen when I plug in an external monitor and turn on. It seems that the boot doesn't get that far. It seems to just freeze after about 5 seconds.

Re: T410 won't boot, blank screen and keyboard unresponsive at power up.

This is the original configuration of your laptop:

ThinkPad T410 2522BF1
i5-520M(2.4GHz), 4GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1280x800 LCD, Intel 5700MHD, DVD, Intel 802.11agn wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Camera, 6c Li-Ion, Win7 Pro 32

I though first the LCD cable or LED subcard could be damaged, but if you don't see anything on an external monitor I tend to think it's a motherboard issue.

Last thing you could try is booting a Linux Live Distro from a CD/DVD or USB drive, using Ubuntu or Linux Mint for example.

Hi, thanks for your help. I think you're right - it must be motherboard or processor. Will send it off to get fixed. Thanks, Pete
