T420 Fan noise [ Editado ]

I just bought a T420 a couple of days ago, and am rather surprised by the constant fan noise (level) after having read that it is very quiet. The fan runs constantly with a noise level that is much higher than other notebooks I've used (maybe noisy isn't the right word here, but it's noisy relative my expectations). 

Even the Dell E4300 and D505 which I have at home is much more quiet, and I only hear the fan when there a lot of load. On the T420 even small loads will trigger the fan to run and at a noisy level. It could be my expectations are unrealistic, but I have quite a few notebooks in my history to compare with.

I've already had a noisy keyboard replaced by IBM (called them the first day I received it) and I don't want to be a difficult guy (the space key is still irritatingly noisy!).

Any similar experience with the T420? Is it a general feature with this notebook?

Maybe there is a Bios update for the T420, you should check it out.

Thanks for the suggestion. I  updated from 1.16 to 1.22.

Didn't change anything.

Install TPFanControl and see how the fan is behaving with respect to temperatures.

Thanks. I'll see if I try this. From what I read, this addresses the symptoms, but not the real problem. Whether this is correct is beyond my competance.

I have difficulties believing the fan should be this noisy in a brand new T420, without something being wrong.

Did it happen out of the box or did it start after installing software?

It started the second I started it, out of the box.

It could be just me that find the fan noise of the T420 too high, but comparing to other PCs and the reviews I've read it seems like something is wrong.

I'll probably end up returning it, if this is the real noise emission of the T420. Which is a shame, as it is the best notebook I've ever tried, but reading from the screen in an otherwise silent room is unbearable. (I mostly read and write in silent surroundings)

The T420 is fairly new and there hasn't been any reports on fan noises on this particular model so far. Maybe you can upload a clip on youtube or record it?

Do you have the Lenovo System Toolbox preloaded on your system?

Run the stress test and see if your system is overheating?

i recently had 2 T410 CPU fans come in that were very loud and failed with heavy usage
