T420 Flashing power button on shutdown

2016-03-05, 16:25 PM

Hi guys, I just got a reconditioned T420 running Windows 10 on a SSD, and it appears to work well.

Just one question. The green power light blinks rapidly 11 times while it shuts down, and there's also a single short beep. Is this normal, and if not what does it mean? However if restarting (from the Power menu) it doesn't blink or make a beep.

Thanks in advance.

I found that by unchecking "Turn on fast start-up" in Power Options it shuts down in a couple of seconds, and the power light doesn't flash. Start-up time is about the same, around 29 seconds.

I have the same system, about two weeks now. Also installed a 250GB mSata under the keyboard and a SSD in the hdisk location and 8GB memory, makes this thing run quick. Also have the power button issue but I see no detrimental result, just curious why the flashes and beep. Where did you change the power option, Win10 or BIOS?

TIA

Moneypit, you got a nice system there. It's the power options in Win 10, you can see it here:

By the way, how long does it take yours to boot to the desktop?

Cheers.

Did some research on the fast startup. If what I found is true, windows does this by saving an image of the Windows kernel and loaded drivers to the hiberfile (C:\hiberfil.sys) upon shutdown so when you start your PC again, Windows simply loads the hiberfile (C:\hiberfil.sys) into memory to resume your PC instead of restarting it. This could be the reason the power light flashes and the beep. I noticed when the power light is flashing, the hdisk indicator blinks like writing a file somewhere and beeps when finished. Not positive but makes sense.

FYI, from power off to login screen is 15.6 seconds, and from password entry to full saturated desktop another 16 seconds. This is loading antivirus and malware software.

Lots of good info on this forum.

Moneypit that's good research and makes a lot of sense. As you said I also noticed that the longer shutdown with fast startup enabled does not degrade system performance. But now we know the reason. Thanks! Oh cheers for the bootup times, very similar to mine which boots to usable desktop (with no password set). In my opinion these are a good second user buy, especially with an ssd, compared to a new bottom end consumer laptop for similar money.
