T420 RAM Upgrade

I am trying to increase the speed of the computer..

I own a Thinkad T420 (model 418063G) /   i5-2540M  / 320GB  / 2x2GB (Samsung DDR3, PC3-10700 (667mhz) RAM installed 2 / WINDOWS 7 PRO 64K

  I ORDERD SSD 500 GB

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GBYHWGL?ref=em_1p_0_ti&ref_=pe_172030_360438790

Will upgrading the computer drive to SSD, will provide HIGH speed, or do I have to upgrade the memory RAM ? And if so, what is the optimal upgrade recommended (assuming I have already spent a lot of money on the new drive ..)?

Re: T420 RAM Upgrade

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, replacing the hard disk with an SSD should make a substantial improvement in performance.

You currently have 4GB of RAM. Upgrading that to 8GB (2x 4GB) should also improve performance, especially if you have several apps running at the same time. However the improvement probably won't be as significant as the SSD upgrade.

Re: T420 RAM Upgrade

Many thanks to hausman, for the blessings and the answer..
Could you possibly estimate in percent ,the contribution of memory upgrade ,compared to SSD?
I read in one of the questions that were asked here in the past, that the optimal upgrade is TO 6 GB (optimal :money and performance change), because I am short on money, I wanted to know what you think of this thesis?

Re: T420 RAM Upgrade

6 GB means replacing only 1 RAM ,to 4 GB.

That's very hard to do. It depends on the speed of the SSD, the speed of the other components, e.g. CPU/GPU, RAM, etc., what programs you're using, etc.

I read in one of the questions that were asked here in the past, that the optimal upgrade is TO 6 GB (optimal :money and performance change), because I am short on money, I wanted to know what you think of this thesis?

Certainly 6GB is better than 4GB. Whether going all the way to 8GB would be a big improvement over 6GB also depends on many of the above factors.

If you're on a tight budget then perhaps wait for the SSD to arrive, install it and see if that's enough of an improvement for now.

As for the RAM upgrade, DDR3 for notebook PCs is very common. Perhaps you can borrow a 4GB module or two to see what effect it has. Swapping RAM modules is very easy, especially compared to swapping storage drives.

Re: T420 RAM Upgrade

2 great ideas: We'll wait for the arrival of the SSD and get smarter ..

Thanks for the comprehensive feedback ..

Re: T420 RAM Upgrade

Memory and SSD upgrades are both good upgrades, but they affect different areas of performance. An SSD speeds up the reading of files, especially when reading a lot of small files, like what happens at startup and shutdown.  Memory helps more when you are running several tasks at once.  Memory is also a big help if you upgrade to a more modern OS, like win7-to-win10.  Windows 10 runs lots of background tasks by itself.  If you need huge amounts of virtual memory for paging, an SSD is a big help also.  An example is large-scale photo editing with a memory hog like Photoshop.  If you can isolate the times where performance is a problem, task manager can help find the bottleneck.

Hey Rich
Your answer is very interesting..

I often use 2 browsers at the same time, and when I pause, and return after a few hours (leaving the browsers open), the computer crawls like a turtle ..

Sometimes I also watch live, which is a bit faltering ..
On Windows, do you think I should upgrade to 10?

Re: T420 RAM Upgrade

Upgrading to win10 is a good plan in general because Microsoft''s support for "7" is limited, at best.  The problem is that the T420 is 6 generations old and windows 10 support is not great either.  People do run "10" on Sandy Bridge, but at some point, you may need or want to update the hardware.
