T420 sound device no longer recognized

My T420 no longer recognizes the sound chip (Conexant 20672) and I cannot seem to re-install the sound device drivers.  I was having some issues with the sound device, so I uninstalled the drivers and tried to re-install them (latest Conexant drivers for Windows 7 64-bit from Lenovo website:  83a120ww.exe), but the installer would say that it failed.  I then tried uninstalling the device from the Device Manager and rebooting to have Windows re-find the device.  However, the Device Manager now just has two listings for "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" listed under 'Other Devices.'  When I try to install the Conexant drivers, it says the install failed and still does not recognize the audio device.

Any thoughts on what is going on and what I can do to solve the problem?

Re: T420 sound device no longer recognized

Naveen_Lenovo,

The audio device / speakers are still not working.  Currently, the system tray icon for the speakers has a red X and says 'No Audio Output Device is installed.'  When I've tried to re-install the latest Conexant drivers from the Lenovo website for Windows 7 (83a120ww.exe), they say that the install failed.  In the Device Manager, under 'Other Devices' it has two listings for 'Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus.'  I don't understand why Windows can't recognize the Conexant audio device and the drivers won't install.

Thanks!

Re: T420 sound device no longer recognized

Hi Gop-Dogg,

Please download the LSC file and request you to perform the Hardware LSC (I.e. Lenovo solution centre) test and check whether you get any hardware failure error message.

Also, request you to find the steps given here to perform the LSC test.

Please let me know with the test result to assist you further.

Thank you, have a good day.

Re: T420 sound device no longer recognized

Naveen_Lenovo,

I ran the Hardware LSC and got the following results:

Under Diagnostics, the Chipset Test and PCI/PCI-e Test both came back "Failed" with the Result Code WMB008000-WLXV7L.  Also, the SMART Drive Self Test returned a "Warning" with Result Code WHD01V000-WLXV7L.

Everything else got a "Passed."  What does this mean?

Thanks!

Re: T420 sound device no longer recognized

Hi Gop-Dogg,

The result code WHD01V000-WLXV7L indicates there is no problem with your hard disk as if now but to be in a safer side backup the important stuffs, as it is indicating warning message but the result code WMB008000-WLXV7L says it’s incorrect, but I assume there might be some hardware issue related to sound device. Hence, I request you to take the system to the nearest service centre for further assistance or share the snap shot of the LSC test to assist you further.

However for your information, please find the service centre details in the below given link as per your location.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I’m sure they will be a great help.
