T420 using Intel N5300 wifi card

2012-08-29, 15:55 PM

First post.

The Intel N1000 wifi card on my T420 just broken, and I have a T400 sitting there for years. I am wondering if i can use the wifi card in T400 to work with T420.

The wifi card in T400 is Intel N5300, it is a full size PCI-e card

The wifi card in T420 is intel N1000, it is a half size PCI-e card

In T420, there is a position near the ram slot on the back of the laptop, which can work with a full size PCI-e. Is it possible to intall the Intel N5300 there? Or that slot is for WAN only?

Thanks,

Mcdull

Hey Mcdull,

Lenovo no longer supports intel N5300 but being as they both use PCI-E slots I would suggest you try it and see if your computer recognize the card. Then you would have to use a lower version of the driver version 15.1.0.18.

Best Regards,

Hiro

You are right, it does not work.

BTW, do you know the reason? N5300 is not in the white list or that full size PCI-e slot is not designed for wifi card?

thanks

Hey Mcdull,

My guess it's not on the white list.

if it is not detected by the laptop during bootup, and no 1802 error code, then this means that mPCIe slot is not wired up for the full mPCIe applications.

If it was a bios whitelist issue, you would get a 1802 unauthorised error.

no 1802 error code. So it should be the PCIe slot issue.

Thanks for the help, I am ordering a N6300 to replace the current one.
