T420 will not restart with SDHC card reader attached to USB Port

Just purchased T420 from Outlet store.  When I attach a card reader to any USB port, I can't get the restart unless I remove the card reader from the laptop.  My good SanDisk USB Flash drive does not stop it from restarting. It's just the cheap card reader.  I never had this issue with my T61.

Is this normal?

Well, it can if there is media in it. Go into the BIOS and change the boot order such that the USB boot is below other devices. DVD, then HD and it should not affect it.

I performed a bios update & changed it to boot to the optical drive first then HD to avoid the usb.

Yeah,  it is best to boot USB using the F12 boot selector only - never automatic.

Even IPods plugged in for charging can cause this issue on reboot. It appear as if a storage device is there and even though the is no boot record the system hands and does not proceed to the next boot device.

I have seen that happen a number of times to ThinkCenters in a large bank. There user cannot boot there system and required a in person visit since remote access is not available. Unplug the IPOD and bingo done. I just chuckle and move on to the next issue.
