T420s HDD on Caddy weird behaviour

2012-12-19, 9:40 AM

Hello all,

I have a T420s and I have mounted a WD 760 GB Scorpio Black @ 7200rpm in a Caddy. The drive is recognised, everything is ok, except one thing: from time to time (at a freqency of 10 to 30 minute) the hdd enters in sleep mode (I can hear the sound of hdd heads retracting) just for a moment.

I wonder if this is normal, becuase I have never had a hdd in a caddy and I know that the hdd is working perfectly.

The laptop is powered by a 65wats power adapter and stays in a docking station.

Can anyone help me on this?

There's a setting in Lenovo Power Manager.  See the power profile in use under the Advanced settings.

I'm using Windows 8 Pro, upgrade. There is no Lenovo Power Management yet.
However I'm considering using a 90w or 135w power supply to see if is power related.

Hi smokers,

What OS are you using and are all the drivers updated?

Have you tried to change the sleep settings for your hard drive in Control Panel?

It sounds like your hard drive's sleep mode is set too low.

Try this:

Control Panel

Performance Information and Tools

Adjuct Power Settings on left side menu

Choose a power plan and click "Change Plan Setting"

Click Change Advfanced Power Settings

Click "+" beside Find the "Hard Disk" option

Click "+" beside Turn off hard disk after

Change the sleep setting to your preference

Click "Apply" then "OK"

Let us know if that helps.

Disabling power down/sleep power conservation for both the Primary  as well as the Ultrabay should be able to be set in the BIOS. I have always done that as a default in all my systems. Since I don't want them spinning down nor should they if you value your data and a stable responsive system.

So when is these going to be a BIOS selectable capability. We don't need a complex power manager to handle storage devices it only adds to incompatiblity and problems should they disconnect. They never should for any device that is not hot plug capable.

When the driver powers down, does it power back up when you go to look at a folder on it via Explorer?  As previously indicated in the thread, you can set the number of minutes ti will use.  I set mine at 3 minutes.

A 65W power supply could be an issue, but I doubt it.

in my case, ultrabay hard drive does not show in explorer after powerdown.

that being, i already did what thorshammer suggested and so far so good.

so in conclusion, if ultrabay hard drive doesn't power down it will show in

explorer at all times. yeah, that's about right. :P

I've been using for the latest days a 90w power supply and i have to say that the problem doesn't occur.
I will monitor for a few days more in order to set a resolution to this. At this moment it's 99% power supply related.

That expected since it goes offline as does the DVD standard ultraby drive. Open the Corel burner or even image burn and you will see no available DVD burner, until you push the open door and it wakes up and then appears. That may be acceptable behaviour to some for an optical device but with a HD. Flushing the cache and closing off files opened is part of the proper cleanup. IMO have the HD in the ultrabay power down before shutdown of the system is looking for trouble and certainly not going offline at anytime while the system is running.
