T420s Nvidia Drivers

2012-10-17, 19:41 PM

Howdy,

I am looking for an older version of Nvidia drivers, specifically: 8.17.12.7658.  The new version (9620) doesn't allow me to select the Nvidia card for certain applications like VLC, WMP, or Media Player Classic.  That being said, I know the Nvidia card automatically runs everything connected to an external monitor however when not using an external monitor, I was able to set my defaults allowing me to multitask without the Intel card being the sole provider.  The old version allowed you to set each specific application, that is why I need to downgrade.  I've searched on Lenovo Support for old drivers but to no avail.  Any help would be appreciated.  Also in the past, Nvidia drivers were more up to date then Lenovo's however when Nvidia added this feature (not being able to select specific programs, or shading the option to), I jumped back to Lenovo's 7658.  My fault for updating to the latest Lenovo driver.

Peednus

'afternoon...

have you been using ThinkVantage System Update to do your driver updates?

if so, and you're using TVSU v4.x, have a look in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\System Update\session

or if you're using TVSU v5.x: C:\ProgramData\Lenovo\SystemUpdate\session\Repository

you likely have to dig through a good number of subfolders to find the package, but you might get lucky.

hth a bit.

Top of da morning to ya,

@Sarbin:  Something fishy is going on...  I went through all of the said directories and could not find the version of Nvidia I was looking for...  In fact, I could not find any previous Nvidia...  Strange eh?  The I launched TVSU 4...  And it said "No packages exist for your machine" or something along those lines.  Strange #2...  Because there's usually 2 or 3 items that I odn't install (TVAPS, TVACS, Intel AMT 7.1, LSC <--JUNK).  That being said, I found the original version that came with the system in SWTOOLS and loaded that.  Also, I just installed TVSU 5 and it seems to be working fine.

I'm now on  8.17.12.6871 (nVidia's 268.71).  This one is allowing me to set program defaults.

@Colonel:  I'm gonna try your download advice from nVidia as I assume you downloaded that version from their website.  If you say that your ability to choose graphics cards is unhindered, I'ma take your advice!  Downloading now.

That also leads me to another question:  isn't there a lenovo support site with all versions of drivers, new and old, for each device?  Because I remember seeing it somewhere...  Maybe I'm just baked, i dunno...

@Colonel:  The same issue occurs with 305.93.  I'm not able to select the nVidia card for VLC, WMP, or Media Player Classic.  The only applications that are selectable are Chrome and IE.

i've seen links to prior BIOS versions on their respective current verson pages, but i've not seen the same for peripheral or component device drivers on the Lenovo support pages.

sorry.

I came across this site:

http://www.driveridentifier.com/scan/download.php?item_id=262567898&scanid=0F3C1CFA32AD4A60AA2865D957889158&hardware_id=PCI%5CVEN_10DE%26DEV_1056%26SUBSYS_21D317AA

It seems to have a listing of all old drivers and links to download them from lenovo (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/83de44ww.exe), which is where I found my driver without installing their software.

:smileyhappy:

to add a bit more... if you substitute txt for the exe ( http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/83de44ww.txt ) in your url, you can seemingly get the readme file to go along with the driver pack.

;)

cheers.
