T430 BIOS Update Failure covered under Warranty

After acquiring a T430 I proceeded to install Windows 7 and install/update the drivers etc

As part of this I downloaded teh BIOS update utility form the Lenovo website 2.99 dated 9/19/2014 as I know that the T430 had been sat on a shelf for several months.

I ran the utility and after a reboot teh update appeared to progress but then the display went blank and the power light stayed on. THis is the current state of the machine.

The T430 is still under warranty, but I have been told that as i updated the BIOS without contacting support first that this is not covered under the warranty, is this true?

  3. Has I know there is no such information about the warranty policy, however the warranty policy will differs for region to region, hence I suggest you to visit the below link to view the warranty policy of your region.

Re: T430 BIOS Update Failure covered under Warranty

Hemanth,

You are correct that I am experiencing an issue wiht a BIOS update failure on my ThinkPad T430.

I have checked the warranty information at the link you provided and I cannot find anhything related to BIOS updates.

I know that my THinkpad T430 was not on the latest version released 19/09/2014 as the laptop iun question had been sat on a shelf for several months and as the notes showe it fixes a security vulnerability the udpate was applied.

  1. Are you able to see Lenovo logo after switching on the system? - NO.. power button/LED illuminates but no activity of any kind.
  2. Please let me know is the system is booting to BIOS mode? - NO

I have raised this issue with support, but so far I have been told that BIOS updates are not covered (I fail to see how as i followed all the instructions provided in the BIOS UPDate Utility Readme for version 2.66 19/09/2014).

It is very sad to hear that your system is not show any POST after switching ON the system, now the issue has with the hardware, only Lenovo support of your region can assist you on that as it requires to replace the system board.

This kind of issue is considered has CID (Customer Induced Damage), if the system is have ADP (Accidental Damage Protection) warranty they can help you out on this issue.

Re: T430 BIOS Update Failure covered under Warranty

The Lenovo System Update Software supports the automated BIOS update procedure.  Unless there was a power interruption during the BIOS update, a hardware failure like this should be covered under warranty:

Re: T430 BIOS Update Failure covered under Warranty

That is exactly my thinking.. I have applied an OFFICIAL update form the OFFICIAL SITE for the correct model machine and now that it no longer boots I am told that they don't cover this?!?!

Re: T430 BIOS Update Failure covered under Warranty

I heard back again today form Lenovo Support...

Apparently perfomring a BIOS update using the OFFICIAL BIOS Update Tool is counted under 'improper maintenence'!

Can anyone explain this to me?

Have you pointed Lenovo support to  Mark_Lenovo's post in the link that sktn77a provided a few posts up? It seems pretty clear from that post that this is a warranty-eligible issue providing that you followed the update procedure.

Note also Mark's offer, "If anyone needs help with support following flashing an official, approved BIOS downloaded from our support site, please let me know  - you can send me a private message with details."
