I have a ThinkPad T430 with Nvidia dedicated graphics as well as Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated graphics. I recently ordered a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable from Monoprice which works great. It carries audio and video to my TV without a hitch, but only when the Nvidia card is turned on in UEFI. If I turn off the Nvidia card, the TV isn't even detected. It's like the cable isn't even plugged in. The Nvidia drivers, along with the Intel graphics drivers, are both installed.
My question is: How can I get the laptop to detect external displays through the Mini DisplayPort port when using integrated graphics?

Here is some info on your Mini Display port:
Can you post your Driver version?

The Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver version is 126.96.36.19961, which is the latest version provided by Intel. However, before this I was using the version currently being offered by Lenovo (188.8.131.5296, downloaded from http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS029033 ), with which I had the bad behavior I described earlier. I had hoped the upgrade to Intel's latest version would fix it, but that wasn't the case.

I am currently working on your issue and have a T430 with a mini display port and have created your issue but before I go on and tell you that this is working as intended let me look around and see if I can find a fix or work around, I'll keep you posted.

FWIW, I have a similar issue on Thinkpad Edge S430. It only has the Intel HD4000 graphics, and when using Windows, my external display connected via a HDMI cable is not detected at all.
This has to be a driver issue, because in Ubuntu 12.04, after updating to kernel 3.4, the external display works perfectly. (On the same machine, obviously.)
I have installed all available updates via the Lenovo Update tool as well as Windows update.
Is Lenovo aware of this problem and working on a fix?
EDIT: I have posted a separate thread in the Thinkpad S forums about this issue:

Me to. When chosen integrated qraphics in BIOS, the minidisplay-port is not working at all. Truly hope that this is not a hardware problem. I should never have chosen the optimus version because of the intense heat generated => much more fan noise.
