T430 - Lenovo thinks it's a T430s! ..and custom settings don't work.

2017-12-02, 14:43 PM

Hello everybody,

My T430 which clearly is not a T430s is identifying itself as a T430s in Lenovo Companion. I ran Lenovo Bridge to scan the serial number of my T430 so I could add it to my devices in my Lenovo account. Again, it came up as a T430s! And stuff like Custom Battery Threshhold and USB-Always-On settings don't work! ...I'm so tired of trying EVERYTHING to stop this unit (which as been refurbed with Windows 10 Pro 64bit) from going into suspend randomly. I'm going to try un-installing Lenovo software and see if I fare better!!

Hello.

Has the motherboard been swapped out in this machine?  You can do a very quick 1-2-3 check on that by comparing the MTM number on the black sticker beneath your battery and the model number you see in Companion - Support - System Info.

Cheers,

Atli Jarl.

So it's possible it has a newer motherboard? I see no black stickers or "MTM" numbers, maybe I should be looking much closer. Always-On-USB doesnt work, it stays on when in suspend mode even when I have it set "off" in Lenovo Companion. Thank you.

A T430 motherboard is an entirely different shape from a T430s.  It simply would not fit or even almost fit.  It IS possible that the model number was set wrong by a servicer or that it is a T430s and the clear plate on the bottom of the LCD was changed..  Wrong model number would have no affect on or cause the problems you mention.

Not to argue with you, but if Lenovo Companion and/or Lenovo update software thinks its a different model than it actually is (its a T430 with most of the ports on the sides, not a T430s), then couldnt that potentially be installing the wrong updates? And couldnt installing the wrong updates lead to it going into suspend randomly almost every single day?? Or to Custom Battery Threshhold working only sometimes? Or to USB-Always-On settings apparently not working?? Please satisfy my curiosity before I confront the refurbisher with the full range of problems. I may need to start a new thread and don't know where to begin with it. I've seen things around the internet saying to check my Event Viewer which I did, but it's so technical I can't make heads or tales of it. Seems to me that they should fix this thing under warranty? Below is what Lenovo Companion is saying. Thanks in advance.

Make ThinkPad T430s
Type 2355 Model 2355A17
BIOS G1ETBZWW 2.72

I assume the BIOS is G1ETB2WW, not BZ.  That is a T430 BIOS.  You have a T430 and somebody put the wrong model/serial in with the maintenance disk.  The referbisher  may or may not be able to fix it.  Normally, only dealers and warranty service providers have access to the maintenance disk.  I would expect that the incorrect model/serial number combination would cause none of your problems.  The T430 and T430s look different,, but, other than the BIOS, I would expect the drivers to be identical and the operation to be identical.
