T430s copper shims

hello all

I have a lenovo t430s i7 with nvidia nvs 5200 i use it for work and some gaming. i'm going to replace alot of the caseing and making it look newer as i got it as a used refurbed so if i'm taking it apart and going this far i'm considering placing copper shims on the cpu and gpu to make it run alittle cooler. just cant find any info as to what size i would need.

anyone got any clues or know that would really help out.

thank you

Re: T430s copper shims

Hi, darkschneider94

Very interesting plan.

It seems thermal pad with high Thermal conductivity value is a better solution then a copper shim. Because of contact beween the shim and cpu/gpu/chipset and the heat sink surfaces. You can't force the high clamp to the caseless chips. Definitely, thermal pad 0.5...1 mm, soft enough, provides better contact quality. I'm sure it's unacceptable to use any thermal pad for CPU especially. So, use thermal grease.

Re: T430s copper shims

so your saying it really isn't worth the time to use a shim or thermal pad on the gpu and cpu well cant be used on the cpu. so i should just stick to the paste and get a really good paste. i was thinking of doing the shims cause i read things of people doing it on a t420 and get made them run cooler. so i was thinking why not give it a shot if i'm going to be taking this laptop apart anyways.

Re: T430s copper shims

If the gap between the chip and heat sink surface is a big enough (about 0.3mm and even more), like for the chipset (because of the heat sink fixing design and caseless chip), use the thermal pad. For CPU use thermal grease.

If you need to achieve higher level of the heat removal from the chips, use liquid metal grease or pad.

Re: T430s copper shims

okay i got you sounds good i think instead i'll just go with that liquid metal thermal paste that sounds really good. hopefully to I get this chip mod that i can put the 1080p t440s screen on my t430s i think the day had one left.

Re: T430s copper shims

T430s and T440s LCD panels are incompatible because of use different signaling interfaces - LVDS vs eDP, and connectors.- 40 pins vs 30 pins, respectively.

Re: T430s copper shims

Personally, I'd try to maximize the efficiency of the cooling system without resorting to shims first.

I'd use ArctiClean and some high purity isopropyl to clean the contact surfaces well, then apply a good thermal paste. If you want a really extreme thermal paste, consider GELID GC-Extreme. Coollaboratory Liquid Metal does outperform it, but is not very suited for laptop use. The MetalPad is alright.

@x220forme, there is a group of ThinkPadders who made a compatibility LVDS-to-eDP adapter for the T430, and I believe the X230. Just a lot of work to install. Smiley Happy

Re: T430s copper shims

Metal pad has almost the same features then a liquid metal grease bat is being installed much more easy.

yep, I know about such adapter LVDS->eDP but didn't see installation success story yet.

Re: T430s copper shims

IIRC the Liquid Metal paste tended to bond almost permanently, making future disassembly difficult.

There's a bunch of threads on swapping out the LCD for a better one here:
