T430u slow to wake

2013-01-27, 4:51 AM

Hi

I recently bought a T430u around a month ago, and recently if it's sat in sleep mode overnight or more than a few hours, it will take around a minute or so to wake from sleep. Once woken, it runs quickly, and the laptop also wakes from sleep instantly if it's only been asleep a few minutes or so. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I'm also running Symmatec antivirus, so I don't think there's any malware currently on the computer.

Thanks

It sounds like you're experiencing Hybrid Sleep as it's designed.

Basically, when Hybrid Sleep is enabled, and you put your machine into Standby, the hibernation file is written to disk and the machine goes into Standyby mode (quick wake). After an additional time interval, the machine will go into full hibernation, from which resuming may take significantly longer, depending on installed RAM size and whether you've got a platter drive or SSD.

Regards.

Thanks for the help. I'm running 8 GB of RAM and the laptop does have a 24 GB micro SSD. Is there a way to cancel this "hybrid sleep" or is it an restricted feature?

There is an area I read about but don't remember. For full shut down it require a key pressed shift or Cntrl I don't remember since I am not using Win8. Google it and you'll find the info quick enough.

Re: T430u slow to wake

Hi all,

sarbin my be well be correct that the machine is going from sleep to hibernation.  It isn't necessarily hybrid sleep mode- although it certainly could be - it may be that the idle timers are set to sleep and after some longer interval wake and go into hibernation.

Either way, resume from hibernation takes longer than wake from sleep.

Another possibility is that the laptop has 30-day standby enabled.  I'd expect that to wake faster than you describe, but it's a possibility.  Here's a link that may explain that.  The link isn't really specific to your issue, but someotherguy's description of 30-day standby is pretty clear.

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T430s-30-day-standby-how-to-determine-it-is-working-and-how-to/m-p/803143/highlight/true#M63268

You can check 30-day standby status by launching the Lenovo Settings app, then Power.

The idle timer controls are accessed via search "sleep" (settings) -> "change when the computer sleeps" -> "change advanced power settings" -> "Change settings that are currently unavailable".  Or the same path via Control Panel -> System and Security -> Power -> ...

Maybe something in one of those places explains what's going on.

[edit] FWIW - IMNSHO: neither one of those things is bad. Hibernation at some time after sleep or 30-day standby.  I'd probaby set things to only sleep or 30-day standby when on AC power, but set to hibernate eventually when on battery.

Z.
