T440P Processor Upgrade

I have a T440P. It has an i5-4200M in it.  I would like to replace that with a i7-4900MQ.  Do I need to take any other things into consideration.   Like Changing the AC adapter. Or anything else like that?

Thank you.

Re: T440P Processor Upgrade

Hi Daguere,

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

As per your query you can easily upgrade it to i7-4900MQ processor no other changes are required. Additional information update to latest BIOS if it's outdated before upgrading & you are good to go.

I hope the above information helped you.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Regards,
Prabhansh

Re: T440P Processor Upgrade

Do you have discrete  or integrated graphics?  What a/c adapter do you have?  The standard configs only have quad-core CPUs with nVIDIA graphics.  nVIDIA also has a bigger fan, but the nVIDIA fan won't work with integrated.  I don't know if the integrated-graphics fan is big enough.  The Quad Core CPUs use more power (TDP 45W vs. 37W).  The discrete machines with i5-4200m have 90W adapters.  The same machine with quad core has 135W.

Re: T440P Processor Upgrade

Hi,

Thank you for that info on the Processor upgrade for the t440p.  In another post I Made,  I was inquiring about upgrading the display. I think I have found the display.  But I was told I need a dual channel FHD edp cable for it.   So far I have been unable to find one.  Any idea where I might find one?

Re: T440P Processor Upgrade

As far as I know, all the cables are the same.  I believe you do not need to change it.

I would look at eBay for screens.  T440, T440s and T440p all use the same panels

Re: T440P Processor Upgrade

I have a questioin I have Lenovo T440P i5-4300M 20AW-S10V00, can I put the i7-4702MQ without problem? For information I get from internet i don't need change my PSU which is 65W 20V both cpu's have 37W. I've seen some of videos with T440p have that cpu and work after upgrade, but official data sheets tell me nothig about this. There are several models of T440p and i'm confusing.

Re: T440P Processor Upgrade

I would expect it to work but I cannot be sure without testing.  The i7-4700mq is one of the CPUs that was sold with the machine but the i7-4700mq was not so I cannot guarantee.  I would expect the i7-4700mq to be SLIGHTLY faster, probably only noticed in a speed test.  I would expeect the i7-4702mq to run cooler.  All the T440p models have the same CPU options.

Re: T440P Processor Upgrade

Well thank's anyway, according to couple of videos on YT T440p 20-AW or 20-AN work good with i7-4702MQ. Dude on the video remove old i5-4300M and put i7-4702MQ. Laptop turned on, everything was booting and he checked the standard info page on windows 10. Worked fine without problem. I hope it works for me too, I post results here when I get the cpu and check it myself.

Re: T440P Processor Upgrade

OK success I get 2x8GB DDR3L and i7-4702MQ CPU. At first it doesn't recognise the new cpu, but in bios update utility from Lenovo webpage are 2 options update bios and change motherboard model.  My current model is 20AW-S10V00, I changed it to a 20AW-A015CL(literally I remove text and write another model Smiley Tongue).

Put new cpu again and boom!! It works, boots and now i'm testing it Smiley Happy Bios is the newest possible 2.52 for Lenovo T440p. Previous cpu is i5-4300M, both have 37W TDP and i'm using 65W 20V PSU.
