T440P no power, no response

Hello Lenovo Community,

I got my T440p three years ago. Now it cannot power up at all. I did the following test.

1. Removed the memory modules, removed hard disk, removed optical driver.

2. plug the external battery and AC adapter.

3. The red LED on the A side, the dot on "i" of "ThinkPad" will blink three time. I can tell the laptop is intial powered per the manual.

4. Press the power butoon, nothing displayed, the light on the power button is off, no fan running, no beep.

5. Disconnect the coil-battery of BIOS, and re-connect after about 10 seconds.

6. plug the external battery and AC adapter.

7. The red LED on the A side blink 3 times. Press the power button. I heard 5 short beeps. The fan is running. That means the power button is still functional.

8. Unplug the AC adapter and external battery (because i donot know how to stop the fan)

9. Plug the AC adapter and external battery back and press the power button

10. no beep, no fan running, no sound, no display.

11. the output voltage of the AC adapter is 20.6VDC. the voltage of the coil-battery is 3.06VDC. both are good per the manual.

I guess something going wrong on the main board, maybe the BIOS, the CPU...

Any reply from you is very appreciate.

Repeat the above step, but leave the CMOS battery disconnected for at least 20 mins...

You will need RAM to boot, if you have two RAM modules installed try booting with only one, alternating the RAM slots.

If it still doesn't work, also disconnect the wlan and wwan cards, the touchpad and try again with one RAM at a time.

Let us know how it goes...

Re: T440P no power, no response

Hi Tasurinchi,

Thanks for the reply.

I keep the BIOS unpower for a whole day...at least 20hours and do the following:

1. Disconnected the wire of the WLAN card. I didn't remove the card from the board because I broken the screw...**bleep**..

2. Removed the keyboard, removed the touchpad, removed the figure print reader, removed the hard disk, removed the optical disk, removed the fan...

3. I don't have the WWAN card.

4. Plug the coil battery back.

5. Plug the AC adapter, no external battery inserted.

6. Five beeps immediately, the red LED on the A side is solid ON, not blinking. I don't have the fan right now. But I did hear the current noise....Even I have not touch the power button yet. Well, My power button already gone when I remove the keyboard frame.

7. Unplug the AC adapter. The current noise disappeared.

8. Plug the AC adapter back, the red LED on the A side blinked three times, no sound/beep anymore, no display.....

Also, I tried my two memory sticks in different slot one by one, nothing changes.

Re: T440P no power, no response

Well, seems the motherboard is toast. According to the Hardware Maintenance Manual, 5 beeps mean a system board problem.

Re: T440P no power, no response

Well, not surprise. I did more search. One guy found this is a BIOS issue. He fixed it using the 'me region' tool. What he did is extract the BIOS file and figure out which section is wrong, then download the factory BOIS and use the good data to replace the bad data. Then his laptop live again!! However, he did not said how to access the BOIS....Any idea from you?
