T440p: Audio coming from speakers despite headphone being plugged into jack

This doesn't always happen, but I've noticed a few times on my T440p that when I have headphones plugged in, sounds comes out of the speakers. The headphones are functional and fully plugged in, yet no sound comes out of them, and the sound comes out of the speakers. I've fixed this multiple times by unplugging the headphones and plugging them back in.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, have you been able to fix it? The reason it is a problem for me is that it distracts those working around me.

Thanks.

(my problem differs from this one, where sounds comes from both the headphones and speakers)

Look for a multistream option in the Realtek audio control panel. Make sure it's set to unify headphones and speakers.

Alternatively, if you want audio to only come out of the headphones and not switch dynamically, go to the Sound control panel in Windows, and set headphones as default.

There is an option called "Audio Director". The options are "Classic mode" and "Multi-stream mode". Is this what you're referring to? If so, which of these should be set? It is currently set to "Multi-stream mode", which I suppose is the default since I never changed it.

Yeah it should be in Classic mode. I've seen some cases where it defaulted to multi-stream, which isn't really the typical usage scenario.

This only appears to be possible when I am in mult-stream mode, in which case, headphones were already set as the default. When I switch to classic mode, there is no separate option in the Sound control panel to select headphones as a default.

Thanks. I'll try that out and post back here if I have any problems.

Re: T440p: Audio coming from speakers despite headphone being plugged into jack

If you want to isolate the speakers from the headphones, use multi-stream; it presents the devices independently.

If you want the usual auto-switching, use classic; it appears as one device to the system.
