T440s USB Ports do not work properly

Hi guys,

 

I have just purchased a Lenovo T440s several days ago. For reasons out of the three USB 3.0 ports I have, only the one next to the ethernet port is wokring properly.

 

The port that has a charging sign on it simply won't recongnize any of the USB devices except my mouse...I have tried multiple flash drives and hard drives. They seems to be connected to the laptop becuase the indication lights on them will light up. And nothing else happened besides that.

 

The other port on the left side of the laptop (next to heat sink) can recognize USB devices but it is not stable while tranfering data from my external hard drive to the laptop. The process would stop and resume mutiple times and the hard drive just got disconected for no reason... I think it is a power issue since that port works fine with flash drive. However, my hard drive does need an external power! I have also tried other hard drives...no luck...

 

I have also tried to debug the BIOS but nothing seemed off. I am running on Windows 8.1. Have anyone ever had similar issues? Please help...

It seemed to be working after several days of testing. However, the USB port that has the charging funciton while the laptop is turned off still cannot recognize any of the devices except my mouse...

Thank you for the reply!

 

As per your statement it looks that the issue has partly resolved regarding the USB port issue, have you checked in BIOS that the ‘Always On USB Charge in Off Mode is Enabled’.

 

This option is available in BIOS – Config – USB option.

Thanks Hemanth,

 

I have tried several settings in the BIOS and here are the results:

 

Always on USB function - Disabled, USB 3.0 Mode - Disabled ------> then the USB port will recongnize flash drive or hard drive.

 

Always o USB function - Disabled, USB 3.0 Mode - Auto or Enabled ------->then the USB port can only recongnize a mouse.

 

So, when ever the USB 3.0 Mode is turned on or set as auto the port stops working.....

 

Any ideas?

Hi HunterDai,

 

Have you checked updating the BIOS?

And also run ThinkVantage system update utility so that it will install all the necessary application and update all the required drivers for your system.

Does updateing the BIOS help? I'm asking since I do encounter exactly the same issues with my FP2 on the charging USB port, not on others. From the bug tracker there (https://forum.fairphone.com/t/usb-connection-to-computer-not-working-or-charging/20438) I do also get the hint that it is suspected to be a "broken usb port". If updateing the BIOS is known to work I would try that - does anybody know, any experience with that?
