T440s-headphones not working

2014-06-27, 20:08 PM

I would like to start by saying the headphones used to work fine previous times I had them plugged into my T440s.  While not using the headphones, my T440s would default to the internal speakers as they should.  When I plugged in my headphones, I could hear through my headphones (as I should).  The other day, I shutdown my laptop at the end of the day (I usually just hibernate it), but when I started it up again, I lost fucntionality of the headphones.  It wouldn't revert to the headphones when they were plugged in.  Hoping I can get some help.  Thanks.

Hi Bfongh1,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing issue with Audio port on ThinkPad T440s.

This could be issue with drivers, hence I suggest you to check with updating the Audio drivers from Lenovo support page.

Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

If you didn't update anything, then your drivers didn't change.

Open the Realtek audio manager. Look at advanced settings (upper right). Is it set to multi-stream mode?

Open the mixer. Do you have the headphones muted?

Hello, since this thread is the top Google result for the headphone jack problem I wanted to add another solution in hopes it will help someone.

I was eventually able to fix this on my T440 by putting the laptop to sleep (with the phones in, not sure if this mattered) and then waking it again. This is similar to the issue with the dimming functions that sometimes stop working when you sleep (although you only have to open and close the laptop to fix that one).

Note I had rebooted several times in the course of re-installing drivers, which did not help at all.   I also had no options in multichannel.  Finally in desperation I tried sleeping, and then heard the 'wake" sound after logging in.

I suspect this issue was caused by some combination of sleep, docking, and headphones being plugged in.

Had to turn off Multi-stream Mode. The headphones work fine when I select "Clasic mode".

Re: T440s-headphones not working

Since this is still the top rated hit on Google for this issue and there are still recent posts I wanted to add my experience with this. For me the fix was similar and the previous posts got me to the solution but I was just trying things as read here and then improvising. I would like to add that I frequently stream music to my headphones and have done this on this lappy for 2.5 years without issue. Then yesterday, I could only get the music and all other sounds to play through the speakers and could not get it to switch to the headphones.

First I tried the sleep method but putting the lappy to sleep and waking it did not work.

Next I tried the RealTek HD Audio Manager using the Audio Director settings in the Device advanced settings. When the Audio Director window opened the stting was clicked on Classic mode. I change this to Multi-stream mode and hit OK but this did not change the sound behavior, was still through the speakers.

I then tried the sleep method again with the new Multi-stream mode active, still no change after waking. I then went back to Audio Director and changed the setting back to Classic mode and hit OK. At this point the sound started playing through the headphones as desired so thi solved the problem.

I tested putting the setting back to Multi-stream mode and the sound changed back to the speakers. Changing again, back to Classic mode sent the sound to the headphones.

I don't know what chaged about the RealTek app but the solution was -

1. Open RealTek HD Audio Manager

2. Click Device advanced settings (upper right hand corner)

3. Change Audio Director setting from Classic mode to Multi-stream mode and click OK (does not solve issue)

4.Click Device advanced settings (upper right hand corner)

5. Change Audio Director setting from Multi-stream mode to Classic mode and click OK (issue solved)

I hope this can help someone else with this challenge!

even i have this problem, it was working fine and started happening all of a sudden.

speakers work fine, as soon as i plug in the headphones the sounds disappears.

since many days i am working around by disabling the realtek audio driver and re-enabling it. i am looking forward for a permanent solution for it.
