my T440s won't start until i unplug/plug-in the batteries.
If i push the power button there is zero reaction (no led, nothing).
Then i unplug internal and external battery, plug them back in - and it works very normal.
It lasts for a few switch-on/off, then the same problem again and i have to unplug/plug-in the batteries.
The longer i leave the T440s switched off the more likely it is that the error occurs again.
The batteries seem to be ok, i tested them both. Also if i only have one battery plugged-in - the same error.
When i got the T440s the internal battery was completely discharged. Did this maybe damage the CMOS battery?
Anyone an idea what the problem might be?

I have a t440p and i have the same problem. I sent in my laptop for repair and my repair guy had to re-solder the power charging chip on the mainboard.
The chip was damaged.
He did a replacement once and the problem came back.
Basically what I am saying is that it might be time to buy a new notebook soon and leave this as a spare.
Unless you can get someone to replace the chip or get a new/refurbished main board.

I wouldn't think of the CMOS battery being the culprit. But yes, do monitor and let us all know if its gone for good! Thanks for the update!
CMOS battery is easily replaced by buying a new one and its not expensive!
I'll let my repair guys know to look into this next time something like that happens.
