T450s Can't Boot From USB

2016-11-20, 1:37 AM

Startup Tab: Set Network Boot to USB HDD but won't boot from USB Bios [ ver JBET62WW (1.26) 9/7/16]

No option to change from UEFI only.

Boot Mode option is set to Quick (only other option is Diagnostics)

What am I missing?

Background: the Win 10 1607 upgrade did not install properly. I can boot to desktop but there are issues. Can't roll back so have ISO on USB.

under security, turn off secure boot.  Then change boot tab to "both"

Hello and welcome,

Can you provide some details on what you mean by "ISO on USB"?  How did you prepare the USB drive?

It may be that UEFI is the only option if you have Secure Boot enabled.  The T450s should have a legacy option (pretty sure mine does) but that's probably not what you want anyway.

My guess is the problem is how the USB drive has been prepped.

Could be - I called Microsoft Level 2 Tech Support for that. <sigh>

I have Win10_1607_English_x64.iso on the USB. They used Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool & its installer exe to burn it. Yep, I confirmed with the tech about that installer and was assured it was correct.

Yes, I know I was talking to Microsoft.

I can open the USB like any other flash drive and see the files - attached.

You talk about an iso and also a usb drive.  Did you create an iso and then copy files to a usb drive, or did yo burn the usb directly from the microsoft tool?

You're using a burned DVD, not a flash drive?  This still feels like incorrectly prepared media.

A  couple of things you might try:

Copy those files to a FAT32-formatted flash drive and see if that boots in UEFI-only more.

Use the tool intended for Windows 10 download and media creation:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Re: MS tool. Pretty sure that's what they used the first time, but I have another call w/ MS today. Will request they redo the burn. Thanks again.

Re: T450s Can't Boot From USB

Confirmed BIOS settings, reburned ISO using Media Creation Tool, still won't boot from USB (tried all three ports just for fun). Some of my Win 10 1607 upgrade issues were things like I couldn't run msconfig, eventviewer, sfc, had a corrupt autorun.dll, etc. Dumb questions: Could any of this be affecting Win abililty to boot from USB? Microsoft is of course now claiming hardware issue, although I've been pushing back pretty heavily on that since this is all since 1607, eg I can never just restart because Win tried (and fails) to upgrade. Have to shut down and power up.
