T450s Won't Power On - With Solution

2016-01-19, 1:08 AM

I just wanted to post a problem I had with my T450s, and the way I solved the issue. I couldn't find a solution online, so I am going to share how I fixed it, in case somebody else has this issue.

PROBLEM:

I had let the battery run all the way down, and when I connected the AC charger next, the laptop would not power on. The power button would blink green 3 times when I connected the charger, but pressing it down would not turn on the machine. I tried holding down the power button for 30 seconds, tried turning it on with and without the external battery. Nothing worked.

SOLUTION:

I figured that a battery pull would fix the issue, but pulling the external battery was not enough. The internal battery must also be disconnected. This process is laid out in the following video explaining how to replace the backup battery:

You do not need to replace the backup battery itself, just open the computer, unplug as directed, and then plug it right back in. My computer powered on immediately. I needed to reset the Date/Time in the BIOS, and then it booted up just fine

Side note: I called Lenovo techinal support, and after describing the problem, they immediately decided to send me a box to ship the laptop to them for repairs. This was a fairly simple fix, once you know what you need to do. I would think that support should have known this solution (as I have seen many users encounter this problem) and be able to walk you through the fix. Disappointing to say the least.

Hello and welcome,

Thanks for posting the fix (and problem).

Did you try the emergency reset hole on the bottom of the laptop after removing the rear battery and AC power before resorting to the internal battery disconnect?

Yes, I forgot to mention that in my original post.

That was the one thing the technical support member asked me to do. The reset button did not have any effect.

I recently had the same situation arise with my T520 4239 ThinkPad. Battery ran down to zero, unable to power on. I remembered on old trick from the early ThinkPad yesrs.

  1. Unplug from power supply,
  2. Remove battery.
  3. Cycle the power button 15 times
  4. On the last cycle hold the power button down for 30 seconds.
  5. Install battery
  6. Plug in power supply.

The explanation that came out of EasyServe, which was the IBM repair contractor (in Memphis, as I remember) is that some capacitor(s) needed to be discharged. In this particular case, it worked like a charm.

I had this same problem and the paper clip in the tiny rest hole in the back worked. Thanks Zoltan.
