T450s won't power on. No lights

2016-10-10, 22:03 PM

My T450s won't power on anymore. The laptop's LED is not lighting up when pressing the power button or when plugged into a power adapter.

A few things I've tried:

  1. Unplugged with battery. Hold power button for 30 seconds. Then press power button. Nothing
  2. Unplugged without battery. Hold button for 30 seconds. Then reattached battery and press power button. Nothing
  3. Used a battery from working T450s. Repeat step 1-2. Nothing
  4. While plugged to a power adapter (used two different adapters). Repeat step 1-3. Nothing.
  5. Used a paperclip to push the emergency reset button under the laptop for thirty seconds. Then did steps 1-4. Nothing.

Not really sure what to do next. It's a little over a year old and this died on me already.

Many were sold with 3-year warranty.  If you are covered, call support.  If not, I would open it (remove bottom cover) and also unplug the internal battery (if you have one).  Then, also unplug the CMOS battery (to the left of the external battery compartment).  With everything out or unplugged, press the power butto0n a couple of times to drain any capacitors.  Don't do this if you have a BIOS password and don't know what it is.

Thanks, this worked! I unplugged both my internal battery and CMOS battery, and then press power a few times. Unfortunately, my laptop only has a 1-year warranty and it expired only half a year ago.

How does this issue even happen? And how can I prevent this issue from occurring again?

I cannot say why it happened, and it may never happen again.

Just an update to this. This problem keeps persisting and has happened at least once every week or two. It occurrs while the laptop is sleeping or powered off. Then the next time I try to wake the computer up, it would not boot. It's very fustrating to have to open up the laptop everytime this occurs.

I will remove the internal battery and see if this issue still occurs. Unfortunately, this halves my battery life. Will report back in a month or so.

seebo,

Whatever happen with your issue? Did it continue to happen?

I have a 4-month-old T560 and the same issue started to happen. I have isolated the issue and it happens every time I close the lid. The laptop may be off completely, but if I close the lid, open it, and try to power up it won't. I have to open the back, disconnect the secondary battery, drain residual power, and start again (making sure I do not close the lid).

I'm looking for a T560 thread that addresses this issue, but this one is the closest and I thought I'd ask.

I totally forgot about this. Unplugging the internal battery does not fix the issue. When I talked with the techs, they said it was a motherboard issue that occurs after sleeping or when your laptop is off. Since your laptop is only 4 months old, you should contact support to get it fixed for free. My laptop was out of warranty and I was able to use my credit card's (mastercard) extended warranty benefit to get this sent back for repairs.

That's good to know.

I'm having exactly the same issues.

I Have the internal battery too and it's dicsconnected now, but the issue still happens...

The only good part to have only the external battery connected is that you don't have to open the botton of the unit to disconnect the internal.

My unit is still under warranty so no worries I guess. I'm still waiting to tech to repair it.

Under warranty the WebCam flat cable was replaced and the issue is gone!

I replaced the keyboard on my T450 and it booted fine, then I shut it down to replace all the screws and it wouldn't power up at all. I did the steps above to disconnect the internal battery and the CMOS battery (with the external battery out), pressed the system reset button for 30 seconds, and then reassembled everything. It booted fine after that.

Thanks for the tips!
