T460P Update BIOS with AC Adapter

2020-02-11, 9:48 AM

Evening all,

I am currently having issues with my T460p where it will only charge when turned off. When laptop is turned on it will not register that the AC Adapter is plugged in or the Docking Station is there.

I figured out that I needed to update my BIOS, however, I cannot do this because you need the AC Adapter to be plugged in. However, mine won't register this.

I have tried everything else on the forums and through direct contact with Lenovo and other tech supports. An outside tech support advised that there should be a work around to fully charge my laptop whilst turned off and then unplug the laptop and update the BIOS. Does anyone know anything about updating BIOS without AC Adpater or how I might go about sorting this issue out?

I believe this issue started after an intel update or a windows update. I have tried uninstalling these but nothing has worked yet.

When plugged in, the power button just flashes.

Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh

If on win10,  please check if 'flight mode' is active in Lenovo Vantage.

Check to make sure Airplane Power Mode is disabled in Lenovo Vantage.

I have just checked and flight mode was already turned off. Any other advice etc?

Lenovo Vantage also suggests I do updates but it won't let me because it is a BIOS update and it won't register the AC adapter when turned on.

Thanks

What happens if you enable and disable Airplane Power mode?

Otherwise try disconnecting system from power supply.  Shutdown the system, disconnect AC adapter and remove battery  for a few minutes.

I also tried this and nothing happened.

Tried the battery when it first happened and this did nothing as well.

Do you know if there a way to update BIOS with a full battery but without plugging it in? I think this will sort the issue but I can't update.

Thanks

I guess there is a way to disable the AC adapter check. But I've never looked into this.

All I know is that the winflash/winflash64 utility, if it's even still possible to use winflash on a t460p,  needs  several options to initiate a BIOS update.

The option for AC Adapter check  is /cac   while /cbp <threshold>   is the battery power check in percentage.

Now you would need to figure out all the other options needed to update bios successfully.

You can list all options  with  /help.

But BIOS update is IMO not your priority #1, because it won't fix a potential HW issue.

Lenovo AC adapters have a signal pin, it's located inside the plug. The resistance between this signal pin and ground (the metal shielding on the plug)  indicates the max. wattage it can support (60W/90W/135W etc).

You can measure  the resistance with any simple multimeter. Disconnect  the AC adapter from the power supply first!

90W adapter should have  ~550 Ohm,   135W   has ~1k Ohm resistance

Either the AC adapter is faulty,  or more likely the charging circuit is damaged, and can't detect what type of adapter is connected.

It's also possible that the cable/connection between system board and the power port is loose/damaged.

If you have access to a mechanical docking station  ( basic / pro / ultra dock ),  you can test if the  system charges when docked.

Perfect. I might look into whether it is possible and see how I go.

Otherwise, I think I have exhausted all options and will take it to a technician.

If it is the charging circuit that is faulty, do you know if this is easily replaced or?

I do have a mechanical docking station and it does the exact same thing the AC adapter does; charged whilst off and flashes when on.

Thoughts?
