Aaaaaand I've now been able to successfully apply v2.20 of the BIOS. Which is so frickin' weird since I've tried multiple times to apply it, both docked and un-docked.
Guess I get to keep my current motherboard after all. And I'm of course wondering what will happen if I plug the USB cable to my monitor's hub back in ...

Don't do it!!! Wait until Lenovo releases a fix which will be a little toggle switch with a sticky base that you can glue to the side of your monitor and switch it up when you boot to disable the external USB and down once you've booted to re-enable the port. That's the fix I'm anticipating anyway. :-)
You can plug your external USB hub in of course once you OS is up and running. Glad to see that you are at least in pretty good shape now, if not a little inconvenienced.

And now to put a bow on this adventure, I can report that I am able to successfully reboot while docked and have my display's USB connected. @Montec, you may want to keep your eyes open for updated firmware ...
EDIT: Looks like the original T460p 2.20 BIOS update package was borked by Lenovo. See this thread
