T460s - Different FANs and Heat Pipes

2016-08-01, 19:35 PM

Hi,

There seems to be 2 types of fan modules installed on the T460s (besides the one that is for the model with dGPU). One of them is with one heatpipe, the other one is with two heatpipes.

Can someone tell me what is the difference between two and which one is more efficient? Lenovo Staff maybe? Also what is the reason for that some i7 are with 2 Heat Pipes and others are with 1. There is also difference between the fan modules. The single heatpipe fan is with 4 wires, while the other one is with 5 wires.

P.S.> And NO it is not the i7 vs i5 CPU, because I have i7 and I am with single Heat Pipe.

The only one I have seen has 2 pipes.  Was one of them made earlier than the other?  (On the model sticker, there is a manufacture date after the serial YY/MM.)  The parts list only shows one manufacturer.  As far as 4 wires vs. 5 wires, I would expect it wouldn't matter.  Normally, only 3 wires are used - power, ground and tach pulse.  I would expect it wouldn't matter.  I looked at eBay for T460s fans for sale thinking I could see a picture.  They had 2 for sale - one with 1 pipe and 4 wier; the other with 2 pipes and 5 wires.

Re: T460s - Different FANs and Heat Pipes

I want to know which one is more efficient when running in passive mode.  I have both so I need to decide which one to use. My T460s is manufactured 16/06. Maybe they decided to change the FAN modules at some point with cheaper ones or they've changed the supplier, don't really know. The one with 2 pipes, seems to be able to keep the machine for longer in passive mode, but I am not 100% sure, because ambient temperatures changed a lot in the last 2 days. Also the power rating of the fan modules is different - 2 heatpipes is 5V, 0.45A (2.25W), 1 heatpipe is 5V, 0,35A (1.75W). So the 2 heatpipe one has better cooling capacity (theoretically), but again I don't know which one has better passive cooling capacity.

Itrankolov,

Lenovo uses two Thermal Module suppliers for the T460s ThinkPad. As you noted, one Thermal Module has two pipes while the other has only one pipe. In testing, Lenovo determined that both meet Think Engineering specs. The difference in thermal performance is only a fraction between the two, as again, they both meet specifications.

Thank you,

Re: T460s - Different FANs and Heat Pipes

I recently swapped the fan in my T460s from the one with one heat pipe (00JT920) to the one with two heat pipes (00JT919), because I didn't like the whiny sound of the previous fan.

Always this drama with those fans...

Swapping was easy, easier than with my older thinkpad.

The result is positive: My tests suggests 2 to 4 degrees cooler (passive) operation on my i7 6600U when watching a 1080p60 video on Youtube, which is nice. This may of course also have something to do with me using high quality thermal paste.

Also the fan doesn't whine, at least not on lower RPMs.

Unfortunately, the 00JT919 model is discontinued. I bought mine on Ebay.

This seller may still have some on stock:
