T460s Intel display driver issue Windows 10

2017-02-21, 20:56 PM

Hello,

I have a T460S laptop and it is currently running Intel graphics driver 21.20.16.4534 (and no problems exist that I know of, and I use a projector and/or an external monitor with it).

I am currently being offered driver version 21.20.16.4590 by Lenovo's System Update program. When I attempt to download and install the new driver, it results in a "package did not download" message. When I download the driver package from Lenovo's website and attempt to install it, I get a message that some of the files are older than the ones currently installed, do I want to overwrite the existing files, which I answer "No" to:

Any Thoughts?

Thanks ahead of time!

I am a firm believer in the policy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" when it comes to updating drivers unless there is some serious security fix, but if you do want to install the new version for some reason, you would have to use the Windows Device Manager to first uninstall the current versions (making sure to check the box to "Delete the driver software for this device" when doing so), and then install the newly downloaded version after rebooting.

If it were me, I would skip this update.

Below is from the readme.txt file for the 21.20.16.4590 update

CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE
  21.20.16.4590

[Problem fixes]
 Nothing.

Cheers,

Robtl,

The scenario you described may occur when customers upgrade drivers and BIOS, depending on what source the system is being upgraded from, and if a second check for drivers and BIOS occurs.

When Lenovo releases a new driver or BIOS, the first step is to publish it to the Lenovo Support website. It then is loaded to be distributed via System Update and Windows Update. In some cases, System Update may receive the new software before Windows Update, and vice-versa in other cases, depending on the product and type of software.

If you did not manually install the drivers from the Support website, that Windows Update installed them, and they received the latest releases ahead of System Update.

Thank you,

Thank you, Amy.

I have updated the UEFI (referred to by you as "bios") as Lenovo has released updates for it, as I know the technology in this laptop, using NVME technology, is relatively new.

However, I DO NOT allow Microsoft to install drivers on ANY of my computers - they are too trouble-laden.

On this machine, which runs Win 10 Pro, I use Microsoft's wushowhide.diagcab to hide ALL drivers suggested by MS.

So, as there are currently no real issues noticeable with this machine, i will just forgo that graphics driver update.

Thank you for your reply, however.

Regards, Robtl
