Re: T460s Intel display driver issue Windows 10

Dear Lenovo fellows,

I'm facing an issue with a brand new T460s. This laptop has been set on a docking with 2 monitors in order to extend the display.

Actually, on this mode, this works perfectly. Sadly, as soon as I take the laptop off the docking, or start it without the docking or an external monitor attached, the laptop screen stays black.

When I start the laptop, the lenovo logo appears, the Windows boot logo shows at boot and then black screen again. I've tried the shortcuts (Windows P) to change the view but nothing occurs.

The only way to make it work was to uninstall the Intel drivers and come back to Default MIcrosoft standard drivers which doesn't allow duplicate screen. I've tried to update the drivers to the latest version, including the original Intel drivers but still, not working.

I've reinstall the whole O/S using the factory CD's and it's the same problem. The funniest thing is at this moment, we found a very old driver from Intel that works. But after a few reboots, Windows 10 finds a newest and install it, even if we deactivate the function to update the drivers in Windwos Update.

So it's a never ending loop. The driver gets updated and the problem comes back again.

Does anyone of you had such experience and have an idea on how to solve it? this is quite annoying to not be able to use a laptop.

Cheers,

poy

Re: T460s Intel display driver issue Windows 10

Hello,

quick update on the current driver issue. I finally find out who was pushing this driver update 4534 which doesn't work at all on my laptop.

The guilty app wasn't Windows Update, neither Lenovo System Update but it was the Lenovo Companion App. It has a feature to install critical updates.

In regards of the intel drivers being crappy, it seems that this driver release solves a big issue with the MS Surface 4 tablet. That could be one of the reasons why it's so hardly pushed on all systems.

Hope this hint may help someone else.

Thanks again for assistance.

Have a nice week-end.

cheers,

poy

T460s Intel display driver issue Windows 10

Re: T460s Intel display driver issue Windows 10

Sounds like  a bad Intel Driver, but you can configure Windows 10 to not automatically install drivers, which might be a workaround until Intel and Lenovo address the issue.

Re: T460s Intel display driver issue Windows 10

Thanks for quick reply and for the hint. I've already try this without success.

I've ordered a digital media from Lenovo and will do it again from scratch again.

It's looks definitely like a driver issue.

Keep posted.

Re: T460s Intel display driver issue Windows 10

When you uninstall the existing driver, prior to downgrading, are you selecting the option to delete the existing driver software, or just uninstalling, because I have had a similar driver problem, and after disabling the automatic driver updates, I never had an issue.

If Windows is still pushing driver updates, that would be a Windows bug.

You do not have the ThinkVantage System Update running somewhere that could be pushing drivers onto the system do you?

Re: T460s Intel display driver issue Windows 10

Thanks for quick reply.
I'm selecting to uninstall existing driver and it's always the same driver release coming back.

I do have the Thinkpad System Update installed but I'm not sure this automatic update option is set. I'll take a look and report back.

FYI, I've managed a few minutes ago to install a Beta intel driver for HD520 - version 20.19.15.4444 and this one, finally works. It's an old one from April 2016 but works.

Keep posted.

Re: T460s Intel display driver issue Windows 10

Ok System update had the schedule automatic updates set to weekly with automatic install of new critical updates.

I've deactivated all of them. Let's see now how it will behave during the next week.

Thanks a lot for the hint!
I'll keep you posted in any case.

Re: T460s Intel display driver issue Windows 10

Hi David,

I do not know if this will help you in you quest to stop the driver updates, but I found a Microsoft Utility that seems designed to specifically stop unwanted automatic driver updates via Windows Update, which I suspect they released because the old method of disabling driver updates via the System Properties/Hardware not longer works in build 1607.

The tools .cab appears to just contain a series of Powershell Scripts that is uses to include, or exclude updates from being installed..

Microsoft's "Show or Hide Updates" Troubleshooter Package

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

Hope this might help,

Good Luck,
