T460s not able to get into BIOS or boot menu

I just got my T460s and trying to clean install Windows 10. I go the flash drive loaded and I am unable to get into the BIOS or a boot menu. I have tried F12, F1 and all with and without the Fn key. It booted into the BIOS on the first boot for some reason. Can someone help me here? Thank you in advance.

Re: T460s not able to get into BIOS or boot menu

Hello and welcome,

Have you tried F12 during/after a restart from the current OS?  Or on startup after a full shutdown (SHIFT+Shut down)?

Re: T460s not able to get into BIOS or boot menu

I was able to get it into the BIOS and Boot Menu by powering down and hitting the reset button on the bottom of the computer. Apparently Windows 10 "never shuts down" and since the T460s has a built in battery, you have to do this. I will try the Shift + Shut Down option and report back.

Re: T460s not able to get into BIOS or boot menu

Win 10 does something more like hibernation when normal shutdown is used.  It's not generally safe to modify machine state in that condition - hence the F11/F12/Enter lockout.

Restart or SHIFT+Shut down forces a full shutdown and should allow BIOS and boot menu access on the subsequent startup.

Do let us know what you find.

Re: T460s not able to get into BIOS or boot menu

I am able to get to BIOS by hitting F2.  But when looking at the startup options in BIOS I see that F12 is enabled to bring up a menu boot.  But all attempts to use F12 have failed.  Tried Restart. Tried SHIFT-Shutdown.  Still can't bring up a boot menu via F12 on my T460s.

Any ideas what to try now?

Re: T460s not able to get into BIOS or boot menu

If you are running Windows 10, remove the "Fast startup" option in the power plan. This setting causes no end of issues with these laptops.

Re: T460s not able to get into BIOS or boot menu

That worked.  I finally can get to the BIOS menu for selecting boot, but every attempt to boot from my Sandisk cruzer that used to work on my Lenovo SL500 - just does nothing and returns me to the BIOS boot menu.

Any clue how to get it to boot?
