T460s with WWAN hangs at reboot - BIOS issue

I would like to report a BIOS issue with the T460s with a Lenovo EM7345 4G LTE WWAN adapter. With the WWAN adapter installed the system hangs upon reboot. When the WWAN adapter is removed the issue does _not_ occur. When the WWAN adapter is installed in a T450s the issue does _not_ occur in the T450s.

Symptoms:

Upon a reboot, the T460s will hang in POST with a black screen for approximately 50 seconds before the Lenovo logo appears. After these 50 seconds, the T460s powers up fine except that the WWAN card will _not_ work. After a cold reboot (poweroff - poweron) the issue does not appear, i.e. the system does not hang and the WWAN card works normally.

How to reproduce:

Method 1: Power on the system, enter the BIOS, exit the BIOS -> hangs

Method 2: Boot into Windows, reboot the computer -> hangs

System details:

T460s, core-i7, NVMe-SSD, EM7345 4G LTE WWAN

BIOS details:

Vendor: LENOVO

Version: N1CET43W (1.11 )

Release Date: 04/14/2016

BIOS Revision: 1.11

Firmware Revision: 1.9

With older BIOS versions (1.08, and 1.09) the same issue existed.

Re: T460s with WWAN hangs at reboot - BIOS issue

http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20T460s/ThinkPad_T460s_Platform_Specificat...

EM7345 is not supported in T460s, EM7455 is. It should report the BIOS error 1802 but is apparently does not work as expected. Lenovo has bugs even in such "core" BIOS features like WWAN whitelist Smiley Very Happy I am sure they'll fix this issue very quickly, as everything that makes things worse for customers while real issues are left unnoticed.

As for "Why ?" there is already long thread about it. Don't try to find any logic there.

Re: T460s with WWAN hangs at reboot - BIOS issue

You're right that the EM7345 comes from my T450s and was not shipped with the T460s. But that does not mean it is not supported, right? It is an original Lenovo WWAN card that is compatible with the newer model. I would buy an Apple if I didn't care about modularity...

No, it isn't. Read the linked PDF from my last reply. Lenovo intentionally blocks older modules, including their "own", that you have to buy a new ones. Follow the link to the discussion about BIOS whitelists.

Re: T460s with WWAN hangs at reboot - BIOS issue

Puppy,

there is an interesting observation:
the card works after laptop's cold start w/out issue. Seems it means UEFI hasn't enought time during the POST to recognise it to decide whether the card is legit.

It's a time to look inside.

Depending on the firmware version, it can also fall into the 1 CDC mode when it is not recognized.

Re: T460s with WWAN hangs at reboot - BIOS issue

If wwan/wlan card hasn't been recognized, it's just locked (to be clear, not unlocked) by the pin (signal) WWAN_DISABLE. Power control pin isn't being changed. So, there isn't a way for such card, i.e.unrecognized, to be in the CDC mode.
