T470 Hard drive and memory upgrades

I am looking to pull the trigger on a T470 and have a question. It seems the best value is to buy it more bare bones and upgrade on my own. I'm slightly confused on upgrading the HD though. If I get it with the 500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm, 2.5", SATA3, what can of hard drive can I replace it with? Does it have to be an SSD or can it be an OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe?

Also, if I get it with 8 GB of memory, can I put another 16 GB into the other empty slot? Or does it have to be 8 GB as well to match?

>Lenovo uses a 2.5 inch SSD adapter to have the PCIe M.2 SSD. So, you can have a default 2.5 inch HDD or 2.5 inch SSD or a PCIe M.2 SSD (using a 2.5 inch SSD adapter bracket) and they are all mutually exclusive.

Does it have to be an SSD or can it be an OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe?

>It can be both as system does has one HDD slot or one M.2 2280 slot exclusively for storage

>Normally we upgrade the Memory in pairs like 2x8GB=16GB or 2x16GB=32GB. But you can also put another 16GB to make it 24GB in total.

I hope the above information helped you.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Prabhansh

Re: T470 Hard drive and memory upgrades

Thanks for the quick reply! The memory answer makes sense.

On the Hard drive, I've seen that answer in another post but I think I was confused. I could leave the 500 GB HDD and then add another hard drive in the empty slot? Can I replace the 500 HDD with an M.2 2280? I thought some adapter was needed but wasn't sure. Or I guess I could get get something like the Samsung evo that would fit right in?

Re: T470 Hard drive and memory upgrades

Hello Prabhansh,
How many total slots does the T470 have? I looked at the PSREF, and it seems that there is a second slot for M.2 SSD / WWLAN / WiGig on some models. So, I think that would mean that shwank could keep the 500GB HDD the system shipped with and add an M.2 SSD to that slot if his system has it? Is that correct? If so, how would he ensure he has a system with the second slot?

X1 Carbon 3rd Gen Type 20BT i7-5500U, 2560x1440 (non-touch), Win 10 Pro, 8GB RAM, 512 SSD, Intel 7625 WiFi, BT 4.0 | ThinkVision P24q-10 monitor

>In order to determine whether system has another empty slot you have to open the back of laptop. Then only we can conclude whether existing HDD can be kept & you can use secondary storage (WWAN slot used for WWAN cards) with empty slot but size (2242) matters here.

Yes, its possible to do so the P/N you will required here is 01AX994 (M.2 Adapter) and 00UR496 (M.2 SSD cable) but considering but these items are unavailable on Lenovo sites but one can get it on different sites as well.

Yes that can work as well.

I hope the above information helped you.

Hello Nibs,

Normally T470 has one dedicated slot for storage either M.2 or HDD  And also if system is doesn't uses the WWAN slot one use that slot also as secondary storage but here size matters it can handle only 2242 SSDs & there are very few 2242 SSDs available in market. Without opening the case its hard to tell whether it has secondary slot or not.

Cheers,

Prabhansh

Re: T470 Hard drive and memory upgrades

The T470 has two hard disk slots:

  • A stanadard Laptop SATA slot; any SATA SSD will fit nicely in this. Anything with an adapter to convert the SSD in to a SATA SSD will allow the hard disk to go in to this slot.
  • A small M.2 2242 (remember: 2242 which, unlike the 2280, means small, which means few companies make SSDs for it, which means the highest capacity I’ve seen out there is 512GB for the card Transend makes). This slot is really for mobile broadband adapters, not SSDs, but it would allow, say, a 256gb or 512gb root filesystem along with a cheap 1TB or 2TB SATA drive.

One can see in the attached photo of this T470 opened up the large area in the upper right for the SATA hard disk, along with, below it, a much smaller area for a small SSD or a WWAN (3G/4G cellular network) card. You can also see it works quite nicely with standard laptop DIMMs.

Re: T470 Hard drive and memory upgrades

There is another thread where people are having issues using 2242 SSDs after updating the T470 BIOS: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T470-unable-to-detect-M-2-SSD-2242-after...

does that mean there is the posibility to use both the HDD drive and an M.2 2280 at the same time, one for boot and one for storage?
