Been a T owner off and on since the IBM days. T's just last so back again and picked up a nice refurb T470. However, unexpectedly I never even considered that the light (bezel or keyboard) was optional. Thus, I chatted online with a Lenovo rep who said I would have to post to the forum as there is no direct email for comment. Okay, everyone can now laugh at me...and say, you committed an ID 10 T error and always review ALL specs.
No problems with the machine, infact, it appears practically brand new - replaced a i5 Alienware 13 (3yrs and down hill after 1yr). But, I honestly expected the keyboard to light up - nope, that is an optional feature. Maybe I was just lucky before, but I thought the light feature was standard for the T series as a business laptop on the go. Not returning the machine...and I do think the keyboard can be upgraded to the backlit?
Thanks Lenovo for making a strong laptop ... been a T series Thinkpad fanboy for too many years to note. Didn't want everyone to see my hiccup on my part, but, I do miss the Light.

They keyboard can be replaced on the T470 for a backlit one -- like any of the previous T400 models.
The 's' variants (e.g. T440s / T450s / T470s) comes with the backlight keyboard by default.
From my knowledge, the backlight keyboard on the T470 and T470s are the same (e.g. interchangeable).

Good day and welcome to the community.
Sorry to hear that you got one without the backlit keyboard, but as you thought, they are available if you want to install one yourself.
From pages 11-14 of the T470 parts listing: https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/t470_frubom_20170731.pdf there are three items shown as US layout with the backlight: 01AX487, 01AX528, 01AX569. They're equivalent, just different suppliers.
If you try the part numbers at Encompass: https://lenovo.encompass.com/ you'll see that only the last one is available. It's about $80.
If you search Lenovo parts lookup at: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup all three show up, and are all ~$80.
Hope this helps a bit.
