T470 SSD Upgrade

2018-08-30, 10:58 AM

Hi, I do not know much about computers at all, but I need more space on my T470 for college

I wanted to upgrade to a 1TB Samsung 860 evo, this one specifically:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1382499-REG/samsung_mz_76e1t0b_am_860_evo_1tb_internal.html?ap=y&gclid=EAIaIQobChMInvCcpeOT3QIVWLnACh0SlgcyEAQYASABEgLqLPD_BwE&smp=y

I just wanted to double check that this will fit the form factor/ interface of the T470 laptop before I buy it.

Thank you,

Nick

What is your model number? 20HExxxx,20HDxxxx.

If your machine has a spinner HDD ,  SATA interface. -or- a 2.5 inch Sata SSD.

If your machine came with a M.2 2280 inside the "HDD" cage, it is pci/e 3 x 4 interface and you would need a 970 EVO.

You can also use a M.2 2242 SSD in the WWAN slot, this would be a sata interface.

HMM page 52 shows diagram.

Parts:

Specs:

Storage
System has one HDD slot or one M.2 2280 slot exclusively for storage

Some: HDD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high, Active Protection System<this

Some: SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high (e.g. xxxGB SSD)<or this, not both

Some: M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 2, 16Gb/s  <<128GB is 3 x2  larger size SSD is 3 x 4 <<2280

Some: 128GB M.2 SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, in WWAN slot as 2nd Storage, mutually exclusive with WWAN and WiGig  <<<You can put a OS on this device. <<2242

Thanks for the quick and informational reply! I got model # 20HDCTO1WW

Sorry, again, very unknowledgeable on computer parts, but I do know I am running about 250g SSD at the moment, no HDD, and I am looking to upgrade to a 1TB SSD.

Thus, Samsung 870 or 970? Thank you

Lets find the "name" of your SSD.

Right click the start button, select device manager.

3 or 4 lines down is Disk drives. Click this and write down the name of your SSD.

It is an Intel 2280 PCI/e 3x4 SSD 256GB.

The names are slightly different.  One is the OEM name, the other is the retail name.

HMM page 80, has SSD instructions.

Video: It is NOT your machine, but you should expect the same removal to happen on your machine.

EVO 970 is what you need.

Note: I do not know difference be the 2 offerings on Amazon.  Same item, one is more $$?

EVO PRO:

===

You will need a USB box  (3.1 type C connector)  to hold the EVO 970 2280 SSD during the clone.

https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Type-C-Adapter-Converter-Enclosure/dp/B07GXMMKB9/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1535665007&sr=1-3&keywords=usb+hdd+box+pcie&dpID=31DoUehaeCL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpsrc=srch

and some FREE cloning software.

https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

Clone all partitons to stick in USB box.  Swap out old M.2 2280 and boot with new M.2 2280 EVO 970.

Re: T470 SSD Upgrade

Dear Sclexman,

I have a Company Laptop T470, I think it is a customized one with the following Spec:-

1- System Model    20HES75500
2- System Type    x64-based PC

3- Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7600U CPU @ 2.80GHz, 2904 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
4- System SKU    LENOVO_MT_20HE_BU_Think_FM_ThinkPad T470
5- Disk Model    WDC WD5000LPLX-08ZNTT0  , Size    465.76 GB (500,105,249,280 bytes)

Can I buy Samsung 970 EVO Plus for it ???

I have contacted our specialist and he has checked and said it is not compatible but I doubt, if he is right can I buy ( https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Lenovo-ThinkPad-00UR496-DC02C009M00/dp/B07JHVL472 ) for it to be compatible? if it is hard to be done or not sure do you recommend Samsung 860 Evo 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD which is for sure compatible with my laptop?

Really appreciating your kind help and thank you in advance.
