T470 WWAN slot information for SSD replacement

2019-04-29, 14:10 PM

Hello,

I am looking for adding some space to my laptop, but looking through the platform specifications, I am not sure if it's supported.

Looking at platform specifications i read that: "Some: 128GB M.2 SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, in WWAN slot as 2nd Storage, mutually exclusive with WWAN and WiGig"

What I don't like with the above is the some keyword. Is there a way to find out for sure whether it's supported or not?

Also through the above, I would say that only sata SSDs are supported, but I've read for example reddit post

that a user succesfully installed Toshiba RC100, which is 2-lane pci-e running on nvme. Is it safe to assume that pci-e is supported as well? Is there any limitation on the disk size?

My model number is: 20HDCTO1WW

Thanks

Hello and welcome,

The "some" that you quote means that some ship with an SSD in that slot, and some don't  - per their exact config and MT-M.

AFAIK the T470 and its cousin the T25 support a SATA SSD in the WWAN slot.  I've installed a 512GB part in my T25.  What little discussion I've seen re NVMe in that slot is that they don't show up in BIOS (so they're not directly bootable ) but may be accessible in Windows.

I'd be very shy of counting on NVMe working in the WWAN slot - either when first installed, or after a BIOS update that might change how the slot is supported.  IMHO SATA - with support actually documented in the base spec - is the safe choice, but whatever floats you boat.
