T470 ssd and WWAN

Hello, I just ordered a second-hand T470 with a 256gb PCIe SSD and I plan on upgrading to a 500gb or 512gb SSD but trying to decide which way to go. I'm quite a novice regarding this stuff, so please forgive me.

I think I read somewhere that due to the way the drive is connected a M.2 PCIe SSD may not be noticeably any better than a 2.5 SSD. Would that be correct?

I would be doing mostly basic small business computing- Excel (nothing complicated), Quickbooks, multiple browsers, Outlook, email, etc. The laptop is a t470, FHD touchscreen, i5-7300, 8gb, 256gb PCIe and I plan on adding and utilizing a WWAN card.

I currently have a 3-yr old Samsung 840EVO 2.5 SSD in my T420 that I could possibly just use or could purchase a new Samsung 850EVO/Pro 2.5 SSD or 960EVO/ Pro M.2 PCIe. Any suggestions? Value is a factor.

Also, I've read that only certain part numbers of the EM7455 WWAN card will work with the newer T470. Can anyone verify what I need to look for?

Thanks for your help

Re: T470 ssd and WWAN

Hello and welcome to the Community

You might use 2.5" SATA III SSD (7 mm in height) instead of m.2 2280 SSD you have in the same drive compartment. But in this case new cable is needed for 2.5" SSD connection, its FRU 00UR495. Also, you should remove m.2 adapter from the SSD/HDD bracket.

WWAN card.
Sierra Wireless em7455 card (Lenovo FRU 01AX748) is approved one for T470. Also, laptop must be equipped by wwan antennas. Unfortunately, you haven't provided laptop MTM to verify whether these antennas are installed. Their wires (red and blue) are under base cover. If wwan antennas are missing, you have to purchase them either.

Re: T470 ssd and WWAN

Thanks very much.

So you would just stick with a 2.5" SSD rather than the M.2? Would you reuse the 3-yr old 840EVO SSD or just by a new 850EVO for like $130?

I'm still waiting on the MTM from the seller but they thought it was WWAN ready.

Re: T470 ssd and WWAN

As I wrote earlier you have to replace existing m.2 SSD cable with new one for SATA SSD (you have to purchase it separately) and remove m.2 adapter from the SSD/HDD bracket. Then insert any 7 mm SATA SSD you'll decide to use, both ones in your post including.

If you (will) know laptop serial number, it'll allow to verify the laptop specification either. Do not share it here in public, send me via the forum private messages service.

Re: T470 ssd and WWAN

The answers for your questions:

> Does that mean no touchscreen?

yes, there isn't touch capabilities

> Would that mean the internal battery might just be turned off?

no, internal battery is absent, not installed at the factory

WWAN modem is absent, while wwan antennas kit is there, i.e.the laptop is wwan upgradable.

Re: T470 ssd and WWAN

Thank you again.

So, i thought that all T470 laptops come with a 3-cell front battery and either a 3-cell or 6-cell rear battery; is that not correct?

Re: T470 ssd and WWAN

No, particular specification depends on the Lenovo sales partner or the customer decision. For example, all present "best seller" models with fixed configuration have 3+3 cell batteries
http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_T470

At the same time there might be several combinations of the batteries installed. Have a look at shop.lenovo.com store and possible configurations.

In your case the dummy is installed instead of the front battery. Its image is below:

FYI T470 platform specification at the bottom of the PSREF page above, there is an information about batteries either

Re: T470 ssd and WWAN

So I can just add a 3-cell internal battery, correct? Does the battery cell mfr make a difference? I'm seeing LGC, SMP, and PAN (although the label says Panasonic manufactured by SANYO).

And I found a WWAN card EM7455, but the FRU is 01AX746 instead of 748. It's advertised as "Work with all new models of Thinkpad T470(s)(p),T570,P51(s),P71,X1,X270 etc". Would that work or does it definitely have to be 01AX748?

Thanks

Re: T470 ssd and WWAN

Yes, you can add internal battery, the manufacturer doesn't matter. Main requirement - the battery should be Lenovo genuine from the laptop system service parts list.

Both 01AX746 and 01AX748 modems are suitable for T470, the latter FRU is the new one.
