T470P 5h battery, even on Power saver with the big battery and no heavy programms

So, I had opened months ago a thread here about the short battery time with the T470P. I got my hands on the biggest available battery (72Wh), but still manage, even after a gauge reset, to get around 5h battery time, only using Firefox, and minimal Words/PDF. All on POWER saving mode. What's going wrong with the T470P that it wont even reach half of its promised 12h battery time? (I know those are Airplane mode numbers, but 5h is a joke compared to those)

I have the same experience with a P40. Have you checked, if there are some unnecessary processes running in the background? Maybe you can deactivate them. Otherwise you have to hope for better drivers...

I have Samsung Magician, Greenshot, Panda Antivirus, OpenVpnGui, Geforce 940MX GUI (which i additionally downloaded from Nvidia) running. They doesn't sound like heavy load programs.

About the 940MX, it only displays if the 940MX is used or not.

As was mentioned, check task manager. I can tell you that on my cellphone, the VPN uses a very large amount of CPU time to do encryption calculations, and drains the battery very quickly.

VPN is not at all activated - the VPN Gui is opened.
From the screenshot here, I cant see anything that overloads the battery.

I didn't know that you only have the OpenVPN GUI loaded but you are not connected to a VPN server.  You never actually use it?

Re: T470P 5h battery, even on Power saver with the big battery and no heavy programms

The T470P has a problem with power management. I have found that the CPU "loose" or stops using the CPU Package c-states after running for a while, could be from a few minutes to a couple of hours (the core C states are fine). When it stops using the package C-states they will not be active again until reboot, sleep or timeout from "Turn off display  XX minutes". It does not help to close all programs and just let it idle with CPU usage 0-1%

You can verify this by download HWInfo(64). Run the sensors-only and look for "CPU Package C Residency" you should see C2 to C9 on battery and C2 to C6 in docking. When the Package C states disappear, it is also reflected on indicated runtime. When on battery the idle "CPU Package Power" increase from about 0.4Watt to about 2.5W.

I have also set up dual boot to troubleshoot this with a clean installation of W10 creators update with the same result. Same problem with all BIOS versions since new in April.

512 GB M.2 PCIe NVMe
14" WQHD IPS panel
8GB DDR4 2400MHz
NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB GDRR5
Battery 6 cell Li-Ion (72Wh)

Lenovo should look at this problem!!

Re: T470P 5h battery, even on Power saver with the big battery and no heavy programms

Hi All,

I also faced the same issues as well.  Battery performance dropped significantly even at idle.

I logged a case with my local Lenovo support and for a few months they are unable to find the issue. They changed the laptop motherboard multiple times and the issue still persist.

All drivers are installed up to date. BIOS also installed the latest version. Verify from Lenovo Companion no new drivers available. Just update to Window 10 version 1709, Redstone 3 as well but still no improvements.

Following configurations on my T470p:

i7-7820HQ
512 GB M.2 PCIe NVMe
14" WQHD IPS panel
16GB DDR4 2400MHz
NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB GDRR5
Battery 6 cell Li-Ion (72Wh)

In fact I have been seeing there are a few other forum opened by other users.

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T470P-Brand-new-battery-dropping-below-5...

It seems as though Lenovo is not taking this issue seriously and till today there are no resolution to this.

Regards,

Oliver
