T470s battery discharge priority

2017-09-14, 15:57 PM

On my T470s, the main battery discharges before the replacable battery. As a result, at the moment the discharge count is 9 for the main battery, and 2 for the replacable one. I have updated the BIOS to version 1.14, but did not change anything.

I am using Ubuntu 17.04 with TLP. I have seen similar issues on other Thinkpad laptops. Is there anything I can do to change this behaviour except for waiting for a BIOS release?

T470s doesn't have any replaceable/external battery, so I'm confused by your post.  I guess you might be talking about T470 or some other system with 1 internal battery and 1 replacable/external battery.

In that case, the design is:  the battery with the least wear will be discharged first.

Wear is defined as:  full charge capacity / design capacity

This helped me too

Thank you for the quick answer. I guess I was confused about the two batteries. It could be because of how they are marked in TLP.

In any case, thanks for making it clear how the discharge order is determined.

I would also strongly prefer an option to discharge the external battery first. I understand the benefit of the current behavior, and for many customers it will improve their experience and lower their total cost of ownership. However, for a power user, especially one who might carry multiple batteries, this isn't a desirable behavior.

I have issues with my T470 too, tech support said the batteries are functioning normal I find this extremely hard to believe. If you refer to the picture you can see that Battery 1 has more than 70% charge in it yet I am only able to get 1.5hrs or so out of it at current charge levels. This was not the case when I first bought the laptop, I could go 2 days without charging it now I am flat out getting a day out of this before I have to charge it, I bring my charger with me everywhere now incase it dies midday (the reason I paid the extra dollars for the battery was so i don't have this problem!)

Hi,
Does it mean that if the internal battery of my T470 is fully charged and my external battery is charged at 50%, it’s the external battery that will drain first?
