It looks like you fixed the problem. I know this was a frustrating issue and we really screwed up. Sorry for that.

Sorry I can't follow the thread comments properly. What exactly is the solution to the problem currently and what is the final recommendation? Use the v17 driver or the windows one with the windows store app alongside it? And how do we install it all properly?

The v17 driver is the only one that's compatible with the firmware update tools. Please check the solution post of this thread. If it doesn't work for you, let me know and I'll help you.

Ok I probably got the threads mixed up. I got the firmware upgrade done before. What is the best driver version to use thereafter? The window store version? If so, what is the best way to get that installed?

We returned our T480 units and we know of several other corporate groups that did as well based on our recommendation. We're in entertainment/production and the support we got from Lenovo technical as well as corporate relations was laughable.
If you're an individual retail user, maybe you can tough it out, but not even Apple has the problem of driver update/port failure with, literally, the first post-factory software update after unpackaging the laptop. The real truth is that there are many users out there who had the error message and Thunderbolt port problems *without* doing the manual install from the software support site -- it was merely using Lenovo Vantage and the error messages still came up.

Your method did not help me, or I am doing something wrong.
My problem is described here. (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/Thunderbolt-Controller-Error-on-T470/td-...)
(My notebook - T470 (Type 20HD, 20HE))
I can not find Thunderbolt Controller to remove it in Device Manager.
Can I delete Thunderbolt Controller via the command line and not using GUI Windows?
I turned to technical support, I was recommended the steps below, maybe they will help someone else, but they did not help me, I still get error error 8x208 sdk_service_not_found thunderbolt.
Please observe the installation procedure and also restart the device after each driver installation.

Resolved only reinstall Windows 10 Why release updates that kill the controller, and in order to fix it, you need to rearrange the windows? I do not know what a bad name for you to call Lenovo!

I can confirm that the solution worked for me. I followed the instructions precisely, and I no longer get the error message upon logging into Windows. I also saw there was a maintenance release of the TB firmware and was able to install that without any issues once I had corrected the original issue.
This was frustrating but there is now at least a fix that does not involve reinstalling Windows. Perhaps a guide for common issues with each of the models of ThinkPads should be pinned on the first page of this forum. Granted, it would be nice if there are not issues in the first place, but that's the nature of tech. There are obviously gaps in testing procedures that are Lenovo's responsibility. At this point, at least they are interacting here and attempting to help us out. In a perfect world, everything would just work ...... but we all see the world that we live in

So now I have TB Controller - 15BF version 184.108.40.206
Lenovo System Update wants me to update TB Firmware Utility to version: 220.127.116.11-N22TF14W
So should I update or it this update will give problems?

I have used your solution to reinstall Thunderbolt software on my T480 and am now in the following state:
I installed the latest Thunderbolt firmware from the Lenovo support page that is linked to my serial number and now I'm still seeing the following error:
Here are the details from the firmware I just installed:
