T480 Laptop & Doc problems

2018-09-21, 21:54 PM

We just purchased 20 of the T480 laptops, with 40AF ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock's.  We are having several issues with these devices:

  1. The internal battery drains almost all the way down before the replaceable battery drains
  2. The monitors connected to the dock don't work in BIOS and pre-windows logon screen.  We are unable to enter the bitlocker unlock key without using the laptop itself
  3. The USB ports on the dock cut in and out.  You'll be moving your mouse and all of the sudden it stops moving, then jumps accross the screen.  You'll be typing, and all of the sudden you'll get 10 of 1 character.  This happens about every other minute or so.
  4. Sometimes the dock and laptop don't proprly recognize each other.  The orange light on the dock never turns white, the laptop never chargess.  The only way to fix this is the power cycle the dock.

I've tried 2 different docks with my laptop, and they both have the same issues.

Running BIOS 1.12, and I see the new BIOS version's don't fix any of these issues.

I've got the T480 also, and while connected to the Thunderbolt dock the screens were flickering, like one going off and the other then going off then back on again... I did have the KB stop working all together this morning had to reboot to get it back up and running. Seems like the screen flicker is related to the sleep function, when it comes out of sleep it seems to do it more...

I did realize from the setup poster they have that the KB does have to be in a recommended slot on the TB Dock.

Also, the Dock itself gets pretty HOT! Why would they put a plastic bottom on it if it gets extremely hot?

We are having similar situations intermittently with the 50 T480s laptops we've purchased:

 - Monitors do not work for Bitlocker and pre-Windows login screen, which is a major headache.

 - The lefthand external monitor will flicker briefly then turn black, but Windows will still display to it / recognize it as a valid monitor until the monitor is unplugged entirely from the dock (using HDMI to DVI adapter into DVI cable). Replacing the monitor causes the issue to move to the right hand monitor.

 - The dock does not properly recognize laptops when plugged in, staying amber until the power cable is unplugged.

Most pressingly, laptops intermittently will have a black screen on waking up from hibernate/sleep - the power button will be lit up and the keyboard backlight will be on, but the computer is totally unresponsive until a hard reboot.

Have you noticed anything consistent between the laptops you are having this problem on? Are you installing drivers with Lenovo System Update utility?

I haven't had the issues with the external monitors.  I'm using DisplayPort cables to DP monitors so it might be an issue with your DVI.

I also haven't seen the baclk screen, but I'll keep my eyes open for it.

I've tried 2 Docks, and just imaged a 2nd laptop for me to try.  I'll see if it continues to repro.

I'm not sure on my driver situation, i'm just deploying images created by my IT team.

I vaguely remember a setting in BIOS that might allow you to use a dock/external monitor before windows login.

I use my T480 with a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock, connected to dual 1080p monitors @ 75hz each via Displayport to Displayport. I have had clean signal without any issues. You may want to try playing around with changing cables and adapters.

Do you have Bitlocker on your laptop? If so, are you able to enter the PIN on your dock monitors? We are using the 40AF docks, similar to OP, but if you're able to enter the PIN on your laptop then it's possible that this comes down to a dock driver issue.

I do have bitlocker through windows 10 pro and I have encrypted my entire drive, but I've never had to enter my pin however. Is there something I'm missing?

You probably have pinless encryption, it's an option for Bitlocker. Normal enterprise level Bitlocker requires the user to enter a password on startup, before booting to the hard drive.

Ah I see, no I don't need to go through that... that would be a nuicance for me, but I guess the extra security is needed in some cases. Have you checked the BIOS for any settings that might allow you to run the monitors through the dock pre-boot?

I don't see anything - there's nothing about pre-boot environment support under the Display section, and switching the Thunderbolt option to Pre-Boot ACL or Enabled doesn't seem to change the behavior. I think this may be a bug or oversight by the developers - I know for sure many other Lenovo models do support external monitors in the preboot environment, and it's a quality of life detriment to users who are forced to open the laptop every time they have to enter that pin.

Now that I think about it, whenever my laptop screen is closed while connected to the dock, the red Lenovo splash screen does appear on my dual external monitors, so my dock/monitors do work in the pre-boot environment. It may be an issue with the particular docks you are using however.

That's interesting... We don't get the red splash screen on the externals either. It's possible that it's an issue with the 40AF dock, although it seems like external keyboards routed through the dock do work in preboot, so some things do work as expected.

I am also using Bitlocker win 10 T480 and the Thunderbolt dock and screens flickering problem exists. I don't know if I have the right drivers...

I use Bitlocker and don't have to enter my Bitlocker key when rebooting... I did find that odd and is the login integrated with my Win10 login?

I am using the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock with no issues with my dual external monitors.

Download the latest driver AND firmware here: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/acc100356

Note that the firmware will not work unless you are connected to an external monitor through the dock. Let us know if this fixes your problem.

I re-flashed the current firmware on my dock and the problem still exists.  I don't have the thunderport dock, so our situations are different.  maybe the thunderport dock is better.

Re: T480 Laptop & Doc problems

We have exactly the same issues with our 10 new Notebooks. Updated every Notebook to newest UEFI BIOS & Driver Version. Firmware Version for the Dock (Hybrid USB-C with USB-A) is still the Initial Release Version cause there is no newer firmware available till today.

We tried with both DP & HDMI Cables and different Monitors, including the Lenovo ThinkVision A16240WT0.

Also, playing with the Display-Options in UEFI BIOS (Config-> Display) does not happen to solve the issue...

  • Boot Display Device --> External Display
  • Shared Display Priority --> Tried both USB Type-C and HDMI, did not help
  • Boot Time Extension --> 10s, did not help

Notebook: Thinkpad T480

  • UEFI BIOS Version: 1.17 (N24ET42W) (Released: 2018-10-01)
  • ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C With USB-A Dock Drive Driver Version: V1.00.13 (Released: 2018-10-15)

Docking Station: ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C With USB-A Dock

  • ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C With USB-A Dock Drive Firmware Version: V10010 (Released:  2018-07-19)

In our case, it is also impossible to get the UEFI-Screen to the external Display. So wheter UEFI nor Bitlocker is show on the external Displays.

Does anybody know an actual solution to these issue?

Any luck with this one? I just received a T480S here at work and I'm experiencing this issue. We use McAfee encryption on the drives and I cannot boot the machine when connected to the dock. It has to be done before it is attached.

I have a T480s with the 40AC0135US Thunderbolt 3 dock, I have two Hp 27q monitors 4k monitors w/HDMI & DisplayPort connectors, I use my laptop screen as 1, then 2 and 3 are the Hp's monitors, I have tried display port cables from the dock to each monitor and I have tried one HDMI and one DisplayPort.  I get flickers and often nothing in # 2, I have swapped cables and cable types and can't solve the problem.

Experiencing same issue with T480s and the Lenovo Ultra Docking Station and the Thinkpad USB-C  Dock with McAfee Encryption.  I have a case open with McAfee on it, but they haven't been able to find a solution yet.  I was going to test out Bitlocker, but from comments in this thread that may be similar issue.

Re: T480 Laptop & Doc problems

I think I've found a workaround if not a solution.

You need to change a setting in the BIOS. Under CONFIG, choose USB, and then change the USB UEFI BIOS Support setting to [Disabled]. I think what's tripping up McAfee is that the USB ports are open for USB drives to be bootable. If you remove that capability by changing this setting, the laptop will restart correctly when attached to the dock.

There is a quirk though... your keyboard and mouse that are attached to the dock or wirelessly via dongle to the laptop will not work on the McAfee sign in screen. You must open the laptop on the dock and use the keyboard and touch pad/pointer stick on the laptop to enter your username and password.

If you change that setting though, you can at least restart without having it go to black screen! You can also attach the laptop to the dock and push the power button on the dock to turn the laptop on and it will boot to the McAfee sign in! You just have the quirk of opening it to sign in. Once you do that, all is well. It's not ideal, but it's probably as close as we can get.
