T480 Poor battery life

2019-05-25, 10:50 AM

Hello,

I have recently purchased a new Thinkpad T480 with a standard config which does NOT include dedicated Nvidia GPU, I just wanted to avoid potential problems under Linux which is the only one OS on my laptop. However, I experience quite poor battery life anyway. It hardly makes 5-6 hours although energy consumption according to powertop rarely exceeds 10W, now with few tabs open in the Firefox, it's 6-7W. Is it normal or there is something wrong with my computer? Honestly speaking, I expected longer results when I decided to buy this model. I would really like to avoid sending my laptop to the service since I need it basically everyday.

I attach powertop results.

Hi Wiktorgorczak! Welcome to our forums community. Is it happening in Windows? If yes, try updating the BIOS and let us know how it goes.

make sure you've enabled 'Thunderbolt BIOS Assist Mode' in BIOS.

I am having this same problem (my battery goes down to 1% before it decides to recharge and then almost immediately begins to discharge even while connected to AC) but cannot find how to update the BIOS or enable Thunderbolt; simple instructions please? if not simple, will take to service - thanks.

Since enabling Thunderbolt Assist Mode and installing TLP (as instructed on ArchWiki) solved the problem, I will tell you how to do this.

1. Press F1 during start-up

2. After you enter BIOS Setup, go to "Config" tab and click "Thunderbolt 3" option. Then you will see "Thunderbolt 3 Assist Mode" set it to "Enabled". Remember to have power supply plugged in since it can be quite dangerous operation and if something happened during this, your laptop would probably fail to boot up again. Sometimes this operation is said to brick the machine but as far as I'm concerned, it was the case only with X-series laptops. Be careful, though.

My experience has been a bit different, albeit worse.   Using the 6 cell battery, we are averaging 2hrs 10 mins before full discharge.    The larger batteries are really needed to get anything close to a daily charge.
