T480 dead on connecting faulty usb device

Hi,

I connected what I suspected to be a faulty USB device to my T480.

The laptop shut down uppon the connection and doesn't restart. It doesn't power on.

It doesn't charge (the orange light doesn't turn on).

I am surprised there is no kind of voltage protection on USB port.

Any idea?

Re: T480 dead on connecting faulty usb device

Have you tried the "paper clip" reset trick?

It is called the "Emergency Reset" in the HMM (Hardware Maint. manual)

See that document for details

Re: T480 dead on connecting faulty usb device

Any chance the USB device bent pins in the laptop port? A 5V short there might cause what you describe.

I imagine you've already checked but just in case...

Re: T480 dead on connecting faulty usb device

Thank you, my T480 reborn and is charging normally.

I use a digital multimeter and found that ground and +5V were shorted on the faulty usb device.
