T480s: Cannot change startup image

2018-04-24, 19:35 PM

I'm trying to change the startup image on my T480s (latest BIOS) according to the README:

 * STEPS TO ENABLE CUSTOM START UP IMAGE: *
 *                                                                    *
 * 1. PREPARE TWO SAME IMAGE AND COPY IT. *
 * 2. RENAME THE IMAGE AS FOLLOWS. *
 *         BITMAP FILE --> LOGO.BMP                                   *
 *         JPEG FILE --> LOGO.JPG                                     *
 *         GIF FILE --> LOGO.GIF                                      *
 * 3. UPDATE ACCORDING TO INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS *
 *                                                                    *
 * AFTER YOU UPDATE THE BIOS ON YOUR SYSTEM, YOUR LOGO WILL *
 * APPEAR ON THE STARTUP SCREEN. *
 *                                                                    *
 * GUIDELINES FOR CUSTOM START UP IMAGE: *
 *                                                                    *
 * 1. THE TWO IMAGE FILE SIZE ARE LIMITED TO 60KB. *
 * 2. VALID FORMATS FOR THE IMAGE ARE AS FOLLOWS: *
 * BITMAP (.BMP) FILE FORMAT *
 * JPEG (.JPG) FILE FORMAT *
 * GIF (.GIF) FILE FORMAT *
 *                                                                    *
 **********************************************************************

 I tried with both GIF (24KB) and BMP (20KB), both result in the "The custom startup image file is not correct for this system" error when trying to update the BIOS.

My question:

What are the exact requirements for GIF and BMP images to be recognized as custom startup images?

I attached the BMP, here is the GIF: https://i.imgur.com/qo9SN8J.gif

Hi,

This isn't something I've ever even thought of before - but I wonder if the build tool is sensitive to the image's aspect ratio or pixel count.

Googled up this:  https://ittutorials.net/computer-repair/laptop/change-bios-boot-screen-logo-image-lenovo-laptops/

"...file format image width and height should be less or equal to 40% of the built-in lcd panel resolution. (ex. if lcd panel resolution is 1920 x 1080, image width and height should be 768 x 432 or less)..."

Thank you for the research! Unfortunately this doesn't help either: I tried with both the original image scaled down to 40% of my panel's height (which is 1440, so 576px height) and a new, completely blank (#ffffff) image at 40% of my panel's resolution (1024x576). Both images result in the same error message as described in the OP.

What is weird is that I was able to flash a custom image just last week, which had the exact same resolution and also in GIF format. I wasn't content with it, so I re-did it, and now any subsequent attempts at updating the image in the BIOS fail.

Dear customer,

I downloaded your original BMP file (300x640) and extract the "ThinkPad" area to reduce the size 305x188, I can update my ThinkPad T460s (FHD:1920x1080) POST Logo to the attached BMP file successfully by following method.

1. Create a new LOGO.BMP

2. Locate the BMP file at the same location as WINUPTP.EXE

3. Execute WINUPTP.EXE

4. Press Yes when prompted  "A custome start up image was found. Do you apply the custom image file to the system?"

5. Proceed to apply the BIOS, then reboot

6. I can see the new logo at POST.

You monitor seems to be 2560x1440 size so that size must be under 1024x576 but total file size must be under 60KB.

You can try to reduce the color depth to reduce the file size.

Hi, did you ever manage to change your BIOS logo ?. I'm trying to do same thing on a T420s (after the default "Thinkpad" logo disappeared) but nothing I've tried works. Followed Rydeen's method but still no luck.
