T480s Temps

2019-05-29, 5:37 AM

I have a T480s with i5-8350u CPU and MX150 GPU. When doing basic tasks like web browsing and MS office the cpu temp is in the upper 50s C and if I do anything with continuous CPU usage the temp rises to the mid 80s C. for example, playing GTA V with pretty minimal graphics settings for 15 min the cpu usage was steady at between 25-50%, however the temp was in the upper 80s C and spiked frequently to the 90s. Is this typical?

Hello has530!

Throttling occurs most commonly on CPU. Both CPU and GPU starts to heat up by which the cooling system pushes the heat and keeps it at a favorable temperature when running intensive apps or games.  When your system's temp reaches anywhere above 90 Deg in celsius, the processor down clocks itself to avoid potential damage to it. Take note of your laptop's GPU temperature with no other programs running. Expect a range of 40 degrees to 60 degrees Celsius, depending on startup programs. If the temperature is below 90 degrees Celsius and your laptop feels warm to the touch but not uncomfortably hot, you can consider this temperature safe. Keep the laptop on a hard and flat surface and invest in a laptop cooler or cooling pad.

Thanks for the help. The temp usually runs in the 80s under moderate usage of combined cpu and gpu with spikes into the 90s. With no programs running the GPU is inactive and the CPU is in the 40s-50s. The area near the cpu and near the exhaust port on the case feel uncomfortably hot while using both CPU and GPU but if the temps over 90 are not sustained it sounds like it should not be damaging the CPU?
