T480s and USB C Dock - 3 external monitors

2019-02-14, 14:37 PM

Hi all!!

I'm trying to determine if I can utilize 3 external monitors in addition to the laptop screen. I have a T480s with a thinkpad USB - C Dock and my current setup is:

- DP to DVI adapter from docking station (for one external monitor)

- VGA from docking station (for one external monitor)

- Built in laptop screen

This works perfect but I'm trying to get a 3rd monitor to work as well. I have a HDMI to VGA adapter that I have tried from the laptop to the 3rd external monitor. It doesn't work. If I unhook the VGA from the dock (one of other monitors), the 3rd monitor will work as expected. It seems trying a 2nd VGA is causing the issue.

The 3 monitors I have only have VGA and DVI. I'm thinking about buying either a USB C to DVI/VGA adapter OR a HDMI to DVI adapter but before I do that, I wanted to see if anyone knows if this will work.

Sorry for the long message and thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

Thanks,

Dear customer,

It is Intel Graphics device limitation that user can utilize up to 3 display images.

In your case, if you use 2 external monitors on USB-C Dock and use ThinkPad LCD, you cannot use HDMI port to have 3rd external monitor.

If you want to use 3 external monitors but no ThinkPad LCD, you can set up ThinkPad power settings to act "Lid Close Do Nothing", then lid closed. Afte that, you can use HDMI port for 3rd monitor.

This helped me too

There is a hope.

Currently, I am using a Dell laptop with Dell D6000 docking station.

Three Dell U2518D monitors (2650x1440) connected to the docking station.

Two using DisplayPort cable, one using HDMI.

No issues whatsoever. My laptop is connected only with USB type C cable. It delivers power, 3x1440p image, LAN and 5 USB devices.

Next week I will test t480s with Intel Graphics only and will post my results here.

Have a nice day!

Re: T480s and USB C Dock - 3 external monitors

Hello,

I recently bought T480 (with MX 150) with docking station ThinkPad Ultra dock and I was able to connect 3 external monitors. But I cannot understand why I cannot use as a 4 screen my laptop screen (3+1).  Previously I had T430 with Intel 4000 + NVIDIA NVS 5400M  (model from 2013 I think) with mini dock Plus, and I was able to use the same 3 external monitors AND the laptop screens.

And Intel 4000  from my T430 also seems to use only 3 screens.

So considering the fact that 6 years older laptop CAN use 4 screens its hard for me to understand why suddenly my new T480  cannot do it. Especially knowing that I have 2 graphic card on my T480 (Intel + MX150)

Best regards

I'm trying to connect 3 Lenovo ThinkVision P24q monitors via a Dell D6000 docking station (2 DP ports, 1 HDMI) to a T480 laptop with Intel Graphics so I'm very curious to see if this was successful or not.  Any updates?

Unfortunately, my T480s with D6000 + 3x1440p monitors setup failed. I was not able to use 3 monitors at the same time.

Even more weird thing is that two monitors and internal display are working fine but when the laptop is closed HDMI monitor is not receiving any signal.

I found one workaround but it's an expensive one - I've connected the second D6000 docking station to the first one and I'm using it only for HDMI monitor and USB ports.

Looks like I need to test some docking stations from Lenovo.

Have a good one!

Leon
