I'm trying to determine if I can utilize 3 external monitors in addition to the laptop screen. I have a T480s with a thinkpad USB - C Dock and my current setup is:
- DP to DVI adapter from docking station (for one external monitor)
- VGA from docking station (for one external monitor)
- Built in laptop screen
This works perfect but I'm trying to get a 3rd monitor to work as well. I have a HDMI to VGA adapter that I have tried from the laptop to the 3rd external monitor. It doesn't work. If I unhook the VGA from the dock (one of other monitors), the 3rd monitor will work as expected. It seems trying a 2nd VGA is causing the issue.
The 3 monitors I have only have VGA and DVI. I'm thinking about buying either a USB C to DVI/VGA adapter OR a HDMI to DVI adapter but before I do that, I wanted to see if anyone knows if this will work.
Sorry for the long message and thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

It is Intel Graphics device limitation that user can utilize up to 3 display images.
In your case, if you use 2 external monitors on USB-C Dock and use ThinkPad LCD, you cannot use HDMI port to have 3rd external monitor.
If you want to use 3 external monitors but no ThinkPad LCD, you can set up ThinkPad power settings to act "Lid Close Do Nothing", then lid closed. Afte that, you can use HDMI port for 3rd monitor.
