T490 Intelligent cooling removed? Vantage version 4.25.44

2019-07-28, 4:28 AM

Has Intelligent Cooling been removed?  Running Windows 10 1809.  If you change the power slider from "Best Battery life" to "Better Performance" you will see Vantage tool bar go from "Quiet mode" to "Balanced mode"  BUT when you go all the way to "Best performance"  It will go back to "Quiet mode"  I think thats a bug.  This is while plugged in to AC.

I then looked in Vantage and saw the below.  It looks like Manual mode has been removed?  On my X1Y3 it shows manual controls still.

After updating to Vantage 4.27.32.0 the intelligent cooling message has now removed verbiage about manual control which at least makes sense since it appears to be controlled by windows power slider but the other glitch remains.  Going to "best performance" still shows "Quiet mode" under Vantage toolbar.

As you discovered the thermal/performance design of the T490 generation has been changed.  There is no more manual mode for Intelligent Cooling, it is tied completely to the power slider.  I checked my T490 but the Vantage toolbar hover text says "Performance mode" when the power slider is at "best performance".  So I couldn't reproduce what is shown in your screenshot.  Are you using the default "Balanced" power plan?

Yes.  I use balanced power plan.  For the slider I use better perfomance and Vantage intelligent cooling shows balanced.  If I choose "Best Battery Life" then Intelligent cooling goes to quiet mode like it should.  If I choose "Best Performance"  Intelligent cooling goes back to "Quiet mode".  Also from testing I noticed this does not happen immediately,  As in if I choose "Best performance"  when I choose restart iIntelligent cooling will shows "Performance mode".  Its about 3-5 minutes later if I toggle the slider then intelligent cooling will show "quiet mode" even on "Best performance".

I had trouble following what you wrote, and especially the part about "when I choose restart".  Could you please try to explain it a different way?  It would be really helpful to provide step-by-step instructions so that I could duplicate the problem here.

Also, I passed your screenshot to an Intelligent Cooling engineer to see if he has any idea how this situation is possible, or how to debug it.

Please have the engineer reply in-thread if you can.  I just oredered a new T490 but I am very concerned about all of the cooling threads and although I have not cancelled my in-progrss order I am worried that I am going to end up with a useless machine.

Put slider to best performance.  You have 3 options.  Start, sleep restart on the start menu.  I chose restart.  Once rebooted you will see intelligent cooling will show "performance mode".  Wait about 5 minutes.  Change the power slider to best battery life then choose best performance this will result in "quiet mode"  if not choose the middle"better performance"  then switch back to best performance it will show "quiet mode".  You dont necessarily have to do all the steps.  I am just giving steps to restart from a clean slate where I know I can reproduce the issue.  Also this computer was factory reset this weekend.  Only 2 things were installed.  Chrome and Norton Security suite.  For factory reset I used a recovery thumb drive sent to me by support.  Prior to factory reset I had loaded all defaults in BIOS before recovering with recovery thumb drive.

We could reproduce it and started to investigate.  From my initial testing it seems to be just a false message and the CPU performance is not actually being reduced by Intelligent Cooling.

Thanks for update.  I only noticed issue because I was toggling the slider to try and get fan speed to slow down.  Its stuck at 100%.  I already posted on another thread about 100% fan speed to not confuse this topic.

A new version of the Battery Gauge was pushed out yesterday.  It takes effect the next time you reboot the PC, after this, should not see any more false message about "Quiet Mode" coming from the Battery Gauge toolbar.
