T490 MX250 Throttling Problem

I have been experiencing throttling problems since I purchased the MX250 on my T490
Power mode works best with best performance, but with improved performance or improved battery life, throttle is too fast for normal game use
I tried to reinstall Windows 10, but the symptoms are the same
I wonder what your throttling is for your T490

Note that the high-performance mode takes 75 degrees when referring to the throttling temperature in the GPU-Z, but the throttling takes a significant amount from the extremely low temperature of 57 degrees in the other two modes

Re: T490 MX250 Throttling Problem

Hi BlackBot! The throttling usually occurs when the GPU or CPU cools down. You can try running the AIDA64 Extreme stress test for you to check where  the throttling occurs. You can refer to the image below.

Re: T490 MX250 Throttling Problem

Hi, an onwer of a brand new T490 (i7 + MX250) user here.

I have the exact same issue. Whenever I play a more preformance-demanding game (on high performance and charger plugged in of course) the laptop runs perfectly fine for a few minutes, the temps of both the GPU and the CPU sit without any problem at 65-70c, it never exceeds these temperatures, and then all of a sudden a power limit throttling starts. Package TDP drops down to ~5W and core runs @1GHz. Then the temps lower to 60-65, but the throttling never stops unless I Alt+Tab from the game.

Why is this nonsense happening? Is it a faulty motherboard or should I wait for a BIOS update? Thanks.

P.S. Everything is up to date.

Re: T490 MX250 Throttling Problem

Same issue with BIOS v1.49.
Temperature limit of GPU is too low (57 degree) under balance power mode. It can hardly run any video game (even like League of Legends) smoothly.

Under max power mode, GPU works fine, but CPU runs with Turbo Boost frequently. And the system temperature ramped up and hit temperature/power consumption wall rapidly. Frequency of CPU became very low and everything slowed down.
The default setting is very absurd. Lenovo should turn up temperature limit of GPU under balance mode. We need high performance GPU working with balanced CPU.

Re: T490 MX250 Throttling Problem

Upgraded to BIOS v1.52, no improvement.

<1.52>
 UEFI: 1.52 / ECP: 1.13
- [Important] Update includes a security fix.
- (Fix) Fix graphic performance lack problem on hybrid graphic system.
- (New) Support for non-Absolute Persistence Module version of UEFI BIOS.
- (New) Support graphic BIOS setup menu.

Re: T490 MX250 Throttling Problem

Updated Bios version to 1.52 shows the same symptoms
I know GPU throttle is normal, but GPU throttling on ThinkPad T490 operates at abnormally low temperatures and performance degradation is very severe.
Moving the power option to the highest performance will give you good performance, but the CPU will also get clocked up and heat will get worse, which will cause you to throttle when you drive for a long period of time.
I want to throttle the GPU properly even in balanced mode.

I ask Lenovo to answer these questions.

Re: T490 MX250 Throttling Problem

It was easy to recur if you ran burn test on both CPU and GPU simultaneously. CPU clock (and power) dropped dramatically after about 2 minutes, although the system temperature was not so high.

Re: T490 MX250 Throttling Problem

I wonder about the power options of the environment that I tested.
The value of PL1/PL2 seems too low
My T490 shows 25W and 29W respectively for best performance.

Re: T490 MX250 Throttling Problem

It's not because PL1 & PL2, even 15W TDP is good enough (about 2.8Ghz). Key point is CPU power drops to 5W and will not resume automatically.
