T490s: BIOS bug: Kernel DMA Protection breaks thunderbolt firmware update

2019-12-10, 22:15 PM

This is a brand new T490s laptop for my client. I was trying to update thunderbolt firmware but that didn't work. It would try to start the update but would get stuck at 40%. After a couple of minutes, the update application would silently quit. Then the computer would hang at restart, eventually producing a blue screen.

What eventually worked was disabling Kernel DMA Protection in BIOS. After that the firmware update completed successfully.

OS is stock Windows 10 1903.
