T500 -Battery draining too quickly

Hello everyone.  First time on the forums and I hope someone can help me out with this so here it goes...

I'm using a T500 which is almost brand new and I've noticed that my battery is draining too quickly.  I know this because I have owned other Thinkpads before (T60, T61p, R61, etc.) and this is the worst on battery life.  I have a 9-cell battery in currently with 80.10Wh at full capacity and I don't get more than 2.5 hours out of one full charge.  I had this same 9-cell battery in my older T60 and I was easily able to pull 6 hours of battery life.  I have my power manager set to 'Optimized' and dimmed the screen almost all the way.  What could I be missing here?  I'm running Windows 7 Pro if it makes any difference.

Thanks for any of your inputs.

Re: Battery draining too quickly

Try right-clicking the Power Manager gauge in the taskbar. Does it have a submenu labelled Switchable Graphics?

Re: Battery draining too quickly

No, I don't believe I have that option. Any other possible setting that could affect the battery though?

Re: Battery draining too quickly

Check your machine for a discrete GPU here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/partsLookup.page

It's possible there's a runaway process that uses CPU all the time. Open Resource Monitor and let the system idle. Is there any unwarranted system activity?

Also, does the system heat up significantly for no apparent reason?

Re: Battery draining too quickly

I opened Resource Monitor and let the system idle (with no applications open as well) and everything seems to be normal.... CPU usage percentage was showing up all zeros for open processes.

btw, yes, the system does heat up significantly for no reason. Even after 5 minutes of it being on will start to heat up.

You'll probably want this:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS018891

See if it installs.

Re: Battery draining too quickly

My T400 had the same problem and I tried everything that I could think of. However, I recently disabled within the BIOS the following; Serial and Parallel port, Modem (don't use any of them) Trackpoint (I prefer Trackpad) and finally WiMax and WWAN.

Then I ran the link you provided and then all of a sudden my battery gauge shot up to 3:04 hours (using 4cell battery).

But here's my question, as I leave it sitting there, I noticed that it went from 3:04 hours down to 1:25 hours and then 2:35 hours.  So for some reason it fluctuates considerably. What would cause the fluctuation?  I'm running the latest Power Manager software.

Thanks for you help!
