T500: DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter?

2009-06-03, 5:36 AM
I have a T500 on order, and would like to connect it to a 2560x1600 display. I understand that an adapter is required, but I'm unable to find one for sale. Are these just not out yet, or what? Thanks.

Having the same issue.  I have found many single-link adapters and one by Siig on pcnation that claims to be dual-link, but is not.  ATI has some in testing, when they send one out, I'll post which one it is.  If you find one in the meantime, please post it.

A cable was just released:

You can use this with the Apple MiniDisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter.

It works, but I have frequent screen flickers -- enough to make it unusable. I suspect it's a hardware defect or a driver issue though, not a cable issue.

I'd be very interested to hear what you find out from ATI. I'm josh at stimulant dot io if you'd like to get an email thread going.

tabook 359 from Lenovo PSREF page says the maximum supported external resolution is 2048x1536, for both Intel and ATI GPUs. If anyone has run higher than this, please share!

Thanks,

Frank

Edit: Josh, it looks like you have done this... what res are you running?

Re: T500: DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter?

2009-08-04, 15:12 PM

I was able to get T500 displaying via dual dvi on  2 external monitors ( dvi-i)   each at 1600x1200 resolution.

Kudos to Jordan_Moss on http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=W_ThinkPads&message.id=3422 for suggesting to set the video card in the bios  to Switchable.

Here is my setup:

T500  in Advanced Dock with Lenovo x1300 video card, with the dual dvi splitter plugged into the x1300 and going to .

2  Lenovo L201p monitors.

Running Windows XP SP 2.

Display settings in Bios configured as follows

-- Boot display:  PCI - Express

-- Video card:  Switchable --      ( < ---THIS was the key setting in getting it to work)

--OS Detection for switchable: Disabled.

Even though I'm running Windows XP, I still set video card to switchable in bios  and it seems to work fine.

This is with the laptop in Advanced dock, with laptop lid closed- so no display on the internal LCD- just using the 2 external monitors.

When you first boot Win XP , you will only get display on one of the external monitors. So login to Windows , and go to Display properties , - right click WIndows desktop - properties- display settings- select the monitor #2 -click Extend Desktop to this Display. You will then have Windows desktop on both monitors.  Don't use ATI Catalyst to set it up -because it will only detect one monitor.

To install the x1300 drivers

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-68588.html

you might have to undock the laptop , boot into Windows , redock the laptop with Windows running and then run the install for the driver.  The driver still didn't seem to install , but Windows said new hardware found  VGA adapter - I let it search automatically for driver -locally and internet - and it Windows eventually found  the X1300 driver and installed it

 Before all of this:

Originally I had one external monitor on the Advanced dock VGA and one on the Advanced dock DVI, but  the external monitor on the VGA was  noticeably less sharp - a little blurry next to the external monitor on DVI . Using a VGA to DVI-I cable on the VGA port helped this quite a bit ,  but now that I have  both external monitors on DVI-D via the x1300 gives best display quality.

Re: T500: DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter?

Great post...

Has anyone with a T500/W500 tried this product?

http://www.startech.com/item/SP123DP-3-Port-External-Multi-Monitor-DisplayPort-Graphics-Expansion-Module.aspx

Since it's a 3-to-1 DisplayPort multiplier, it looks like it could enable multiple external monitors in digital mode, without needing an AdvancedDock or any other kind of docking station.  (Just buy 3 DisplayPort to Single-Link DVI-D adapters.)  Am I too optimistic??

I have a T500, my father has a W500, so if people have experience with this on either machine I'd be happy to hear what you've found.

Thanks...

the current displayport on thinkpads can't support such a high resolution... WQXGA is the best it can muster as far as i know (i haven't personally tried it, since i don't have a WQXGA screen)..... you could try the Lenovo usb2dvi converter instead, each of them can support one WUXGA LCD using one usb port.

Do you think it could drive two 1920 x 1200 displays?

Only way I know for sure to drive 2 1920 x 1200 is with advanced mini-dock. Put one on VGA and one on DVI.  Not sure if you can use the display port to do this.
