T500 HDD Upgrade

Hi,

I have a T500 2242-35U, with a 7200RPM 160 GB Hitachi HDD. I would like to upgrade it to something larger, but when I spoke to a Lenovo support representative, he said I can only install a HDD that is up to 320 GB (according to the data in his system). This doesn't seem right. How can I check the compatibility of a given HDD with my T500?

For example, will the Western Digital Scorpio Black (500 GB, WD5000BEKT) be compatible?

I'd really appreciate any help with this issue!

Thanks

Re: T500 HDD Upgrade

I have a 500GB Scorpio Black in my T400 with no issues whatsoever. Any standard 2.5" SATA notebook drive of 9.5mm drive height should work.

Re: T500 HDD Upgrade

Colonel, to pick a nit here,  IIRC the actual height spec for these drives is 9.5mm.

I know that's what you meant, but some readers may get lost in the weeds looking for a 9mm drive...

That has got to be one of the weirder specs:  2.5inches x 9.5mm Smiley Happy

Re: T500 HDD Upgrade

A larger drive should work without any problems. I don't understand why the Lenovo agent would make such statement. You can buy a Lenovo T520 with a 500GB 7200RPM hard drive directly off their website. That WD should work fine. Make sure it's SATA and not ATA. Also, be sure to make your recovery discs as you will need them to install the OS back to the notebook.

Re: T500 HDD Upgrade

I don't know for sure, but I think Lenovo's statement is that Lenovo has not QUALIFIED any 500GB drive to work in the T500, and as such Lenovo does not sell that option for the T500.  Of course this does not mean that the T500 won't work with a 500GB drive (I am typing on a T500 with a 500GB drive at this very moment), it just means that Lenovo has not tested and does not support that configuration.  If you need more HDD space, then I personally recommend the WD black - it's an excellent drive!

Re: T500 HDD Upgrade

My most recent upgrade is from a WD Blue 500GB to a WD Black 750 GB.  I guess the Lenovo 'script' stops at 320GB because that was the largest 2.5" HD available when the books for the T500 were written.

The only problem that I have found is that the 'cloning' of disks this size can take a relatively long time but the Acronis tools I use make it easy, just sit back and watch a good telly programme while it happens.

Re: T500 HDD Upgrade

I installed that exact drive in my daughter's T500, no problems, and quite fast.

Re: T500 HDD Upgrade

@mikekemp and @DonMannino,

I'm curious to know if your new WD drives make any strange noises.  The WD 500 black in my T400 was so obnoxious I returned it (both of them) and installed a Hitachi: Strange Laptop Drive Noise: "Whoosh"

It's too bad.  The WD specs out about the same as the Hitachi, but it seemed "snappier" loading apps.  Hopefully your 750s don't make noise, or it's not audible in your particular machines.

Re: T500 HDD Upgrade

Yeah my 500GB Scorpio Black makes a soft whooshing sound too. It's not bad for me; about equivalent to fan level 2 on a T400, which is usually where my fan stays.
